!957 Corvette FI 293 HP Pistons

I have owned my 57 FI for 283 HP for 49 years and am interested in replacing the original piston can you believe oversized pistons. Who builds these pistons and where can I buy the 10.5 CR originl piston.

    John------

The original pistons are long-since GM-discontinued. You might find an NOS set on eBay but you might have to pay dearly for them. On top of that, they're old technology and inferior to what you can buy today.

The original pistons for your application were conventional cast with 2 valve reliefs and a modest dome. You can obtain very similarly configured pistons from Keith Black-Silvolite. However, these are far superior pistons as they use modern casting and machining technology and are cast from high silicon (hypereutectic) aluminum alloy. They are far stronger than your original pistons and nearly as strong as forged. However, they run closer bore-to-piston clearances for less blow-by, less noise, and less wear than forged pistons.

KB166 are just about perfect for your application if you want to keep the compression ratio at about 10.5:1. These have a dome configuration very similar to the original configuration. These pistons are only available in 0.030" and 0.060" oversizes, though.

If you decide to use these pistons, make sure that you use the top ring gap that is recommended by KB. This is a must with these pistons.

Hi John, Joe is a good man to listen to . He has given many of us info that has helped us keep our cars going.

On that note, you may have read some of my posts on my upcoming trip to all 48 states, meeting 30 year or more owners of corvettes, You certainly are one of the longest one time owners : I have owned my 66 L79 roadster for 40 years.

see below copy of one of the posts:

" Hi, I have come up with a general route across the US for my 48 state trip to visit and research owners of corvettes for 30 or more years.

Many of you have already sent me locations. This route is the general direction that I will be heading and I will travel about 200 miles on either side to visit .

If you would like to be part of this project and share your story with me, let me know with a PM of your location, zip, phone etc.

In a few months I will have a more accurate route and will share it with you. I will also be visiting others who would like me to stop by to share my trip experiences, even if you have not owned your car for that long.

I would also like to meet family members who may have inherited their car from a family member. I am also trying to stop at Corvette historical sites, clubs and and chapters. "

The link below will take you to my map.

      Look forward to meeting you

      Jack

John, Egge (www.EGGE.com) has new cast for your engine (Part Number EP2148, page number 92 of their catalog). If you want oversized request size you need. Tel. 866-996-3443

I am thinking of getting an extra set for my '57. If you get theirs let me know what you think.

        Steve
