Question on painted engine items 1975

When an item in the Assembly Manual is identified with a box (half black), instead of an Item Number, it means that the item is a part of the Engine Assembly? Does this mean that the item is painted orange along with everything else? If that's the case, would the EGR Valve Base (and parts of the Valve itself) and also the Air / Choke Manifold cover be painted orange? If not they must be assembled afterward but prior to assembly plant?
    Thanks, AL

That symbol in the AIM means the item is part of an assembly supplied to St. Louis. In the case of the engine it does not necessarily mean the part is installed on the engine before paint. A specific part could have been installed at the engine plant after paint. The best learning tool for these details are "original" cars. In some cases one may need to find a car built close in time to yours in that sometimes the engine assembly plant procedures changed. Or one may have to observe a number of “original” cars to determine typical factory production. One also needs to consider that in some years there was more than one engine plant, and their practices could be different depending on which details one is observing. That is not your case, but it could apply to other readers.

Sometimes the TIM&JG will offer guidance on the finish of particular items also.
