    1967 Rally Wheel Color

I am in the process of refinishing the original rally wheels from my '67, #8902. The wheels will be bead blasted before painting argent silver. Should a primer be used, and if so, does type and/or color make any difference. Any input is appreciated. Pics of wheels are attached.

I will take a stab at this. My understanding is that in 67 they were primed black and then only painted argent silver from the front with obvious overspray through the wheel openings onto the back. Is that correct gang?

      Kirk,
I'm not an "authority" by any means BUT if I was you'd get a gold star!!

Jeff here's another link from awhile back (Yes, I was trying to find out about my 67 rallys also):

      https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...paint&uid=5236

If you use the "search" at the top of the page and type in "rally wheel paint" there are several posts about what to do. As they discuss, the argent silver color actually varied from year to year. The same silver in the 70's wasn't the same as in 67. Good luck. I'm in the process of painting mine now.

      Take care,
      Shooter

        Re: 1967 Rally Wheel Color

Thanks for all comments. After further searching, I have come to the following conclusions:
        1) Wheels were painted black when shipped from Kelsey Hayes to St. Louis
        2) St. Louis painted only the outside (valve stem side) silver. The
backside and the inside of the wheel was left black.
        Anyone have other thoughts?

          Re: 1967 Rally Wheel Color

read the article titled "Authenticating 1967 Rally Wheels" in current Restorer and look at the color images of 1967 wheel paint. After viewing and photographing many original wheels it is my opinion there is no correct argent silver wheel color. The paint appearance must be fine particle glossy metallic. Two readily available aerosol paint colors which I believe represent the average colors are of the Plasti-Kote brand, labeled "Officially Licensed Nascar" and labeled exact match touchup spray. The paint part numbers I favor are FM 8118 which is a bright silver metallic and FM 8070 which is a gray silver metallic. My favorite original color was from vin #12062(G27) which I would describe as a white argent silver similar to a cadillac body color from 1967. This paint image is the second from left in the article. This is my opinion based on observing many wheels.

            Jeff -

The wheels were shipped raw (oiled) from Kelsey-Hayes, and were both dip-primed black and face-sprayed argent silver at St. Louis. Kelsey-Hayes painted Service wheels gray so they wouldn't rust in warehouse storage.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I plan to take detailed pics of all pertinent stampings found on each wheel before painting. Will paint all wheels black, then paint the street side argent silver.
Thanks again for all the help.

Is this black paint, flat semi-gloss, satin or gloss?

                Thanks

                  Gerald,

In my opinion the primer has a dull sheen like semi flat. If you spray the argent silver through the holes like factory production the sheen on most black will be covered with overspray.

Intersting Jeff, your VIN tells us your car would be a JAN-67 build, but if I read the dates correctly in your photos they appear to be stamped 4-67.

If you read the article titled "Authenticating 1967 Rally Wheels" by Wendel you "could" have DG stamped wheels for a JAN. built car.

Since I purchased my '67 I have been on the "hunt" for correct wheels for my DEC-66 car and Wendel has been a BIG help and I have located two correct wheels to date. I find this subject of real interest, so please provide more detail if you have any thing further to share.

Thanks to Wendel for all his efforts researching the '67 wheels

                        Kurt,
I also have a Dec 66 car, somewhere around the 28-30, Vin is 7091. When was yours? Also I recently put together a set of rallys I believe to be correct from what I've been able to research. I also used some of Wendel's information. You're correct in your comment about Wendel and how valuable his information is to those of us searching for the correct parts. I found the rallys on Craigslist at a steal (IMO) for $250 including shipping for 4 large DC. If I remember correctly the dates are 8-66, but I've slept too much since then. I will head over to the shop later this morning and verify. On the car I still have the front end (springs, a-arms, suspension) apart but hope to have it back together in the next couple weeks. I'm still trying to decide which Redline radials to get for the rallys. There's been several posts on the forum concerning tires/rallys and I'm leaning towards Diamondback Firestone Supremes like John H has posted about in the past. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. It's maroon/saddle/327/4speed.

After reading Wendel's article on the '67 wheels, I tried contacting the fella from whom I bought the car (in 1979). Found out he has passed away, but did talk to his son. Was told his Dad bought the car about two years earlier, and it had mag wheels. He located 5 original '67 wheels and put those on, and started showing the car. The car seems to be otherwise totally original and unrestored except for a repaint (1978). I had no reason to think the wheels were not original to the car until I decided to repaint them, and then discovered the 4/67 datestamp after dismounting the tires. I sent Wendel detailed pics of all five wheels. My VIN is 8902, built F23 (Jan 23rd), and feel it probably came with DG wheels, dated in January, which I am trying to find. If anyone would like the wheel pictures, PM me with an Email address to send to.

                              Jeff,

I have a set of 4-DG wheels that came off a F04 built car - VIN 0733X. There were not any year or month stamps on the inside rim on any of the four. As far as judging goes, DC or DG is acceptable - it's up to you as how far you want to go to have "the correct" wheels to match the build date of your '67. For me, the search is half the fun!
