    c-1 side window question

I am trying to install new side window glass into my rechromed frame. I bought new Corvette Central gasket material. I thought the side of the gasket strip with the plastic pull off material was supposed to stick to the glass but there is not enough adhesive to adhere to the glass. Can someone help with a procedure to install the frame to the glass?

    Allen,

I have all these parts spread out on my workbench and was looking the job over this weekend. The reproduction setting tape is flat, lacks adhesive, is wider then what is required (measures 1 1/2" in width) and appears to be at lest .010" thicker then the best sample of what I took off.

I formed the tape over the glass and put some weight on it to see if it would form itself around the glass. I will try to assemble the frame next weekend. I am concerned that the glass with the tape maybe too thick to easily insert in to the restored frame.

Thanks for the reply. I agree that the material I bought seems too thick. I cannot measure anything as the material I removed from the window assembly is long gone. what was the consistency of the material you removed? I am most concerned about the corners. Got any ideas for a material alternative? Do you think the material needs to be stuck to the window and then frame installed over this? Seems most logical to me. This would allow one to fit the corners. Thanks in advance for your additional thoughts.

If you insert the material in the frame and then pull the frame over the glass, you should get everything to fit. I used padded bar clamps to pull the frame over the glass. You can then trim the excess material with a hobby knife. You will have to cut (miter) the tape at the corners so it does not overlap inside the window frame.

          John,

Thanks for the information. I will give this a try over the weekend.

                John,

Thank you for the photos and the tips. I worked on this today.

I tried to pull the frame on to the glass but the two corners wouldn't go over the edge of the glass. I took the frame apart and noticed the metal of the frame in the two corners was thicker then the rest of the frame. I used a Dremel to remove some material from the inside channel and tried to press the frame over the glass. It was a battle, but it went far enough that I was able to get the screws through the frame and lower sash.

When I did the second door glass, I removed a little more material then I did on the first one and the assembly was much easier. It also helped to insert the setting tape in to the frame first.

I just hope the glass is far enough in to the frame, especially in the corners.

                Thanks again.

                Regards,

                Dennis

local auto glass companies should have the channel tape. they can supply the correct thickness(the dimensions of which i can't recall at this late date) i haven't had to do any grinding on the window frames of all the c-1's i ve done. mike

                    Mike,

Based on your experience, if the lower sash is seated against the bottom of the glass and the screw holes line up, is the glass inserted in to the top frame enough?

                    Thanks,

                    Dennis
