Suggestion on revealing a C2 rear axle date code?

Generally the only item with serious rust on my 66 is the rear axle pinion for some reason, in addition to axle lube at the cover junction. I'm trying to get that rust off to reveal confirm the axle build date & code.

I started with some steel wool saw a 4 and a 6 but as I worked the rust away these numbers were becoming fainter.

Is there a suggestion, acid or bead blast, or?? to slowly and carefully reveal what might be there? Note on the outer corner where the ratio code should be has the most pitting...

If it is just rust, you might try some naval jelly. That is gentler than steel wool and can get at the rust around the numbers without taking them down.

Ronald, maybe try some rust remover - namely safestrustremover.com. I was told by some members that this product neutralizes the rust without harming the metal underneath. However, don't leave it on the area too long. Go to their website, I did. Seems like amazing stuff. I never used, as I got my engine pad clean and de-rusted without the need for the product. Others suggested naval jelly. On a rear, that's rusted badly it's worth a shot. The area you are working with is not as "delicate" as an engine pad after all.
Also, what about a jewelers loop? Not sure how good your eyesight is (it almost doesn't matter how good it is as a jeweler's loop can magnify 8-10 times). You don't want to grind away on it or the casting date and code will be gone forever. If it were me, I would try the above before going to more drastic means. Let me know how it comes. Good luck. Maybe other members will have other/better suggestions. ARA
