Does any one there know the Delco model number for the 68 alternator? I'm looking for a website to help me do a complete rebuild. I have found rebuilding instructions of the 10si and 12si but nothing on the alternators that are externaly regulated.

Re: Alternator model number
The model number is 5-1/2" 1D. This is also sometimes referred to as 10DN.
You will find rebuilding instructions in a 1963-69 Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Alternator model number
I have a chassis service manual it shows how to test the alternator but nothing about rebuilding it.- Top

Re: Alternator model number
Pressing diodes in and out of the bridge and rear case half is not DIY "friendly". The rest of the process is not difficult. If you dont have the correct tools, cracking the bridge or rear case half is the usual result.- Top

Re: Alternator model number
A Chassis Overhaul Manual will tell you how to overhaul the unit once it is off the car -- that is on the bench.
For the overhaul of your alternator you will need a Chassis Overhaul Manual for your year Corvette.
Edit add: In addition to John's cautions above, you should consider the availability of parts. Unless you have good quality parts in hand, you may face challenges sourcing them now days. Our alternators and starters are real old-school equipment.Terry- Top

Re: Alternator model number
Joe, Terry,
Was a Chassis Overhaul Manual available for the 1970 'vette, and if so, do you have any idea how I can get one?
Thanks.- Top

Re: Alternator model number
Click on the "NCRS Store" radio button at the top of the page. They should have a 1970 Chassis Overhaul Manual for you, and you will be helping to support this site..Terry- Top

Re: Alternator model number
Yes it was --
Methinks that 'YES' is actually a 'yes/no/kinda'... The reason I say that is the '70 Corvette went to production late (first production build, Jan 1970) and by that time ALL of the standard Chevy/Fisher Body service books were printed and in distribution having been released at the traditional summer time model year change over point.
The '70 Chassis Service Manual covers the '69 Corvette which was still in production at the time of the manuals' formal release. There was a service eratta phamplet that came along to 'update' the CSM regarding the major 1970 Corvette components that changed from their equivalents in '69.
I suspect the same is true of the Chassis Overhaul Manual...- Top

FWIW: The errata pamphlet you mention was an issue of [i]Chevrolet Service News[/b]. The May issue if memory serves. A copy of that too is available from the NCRS Store.Terry- Top

Re: Alternator model number
Terry,
Thanks for the info on the Chassis Overhaul Manual. I always look first to the NCRS store when making purchases. It appears, though, that the stored doesn't sell the Overhaul Manual, or at least I cant find it when I perform a search in the store.
Thanks.- Top

Re: Alternator model number
That may be the case, Ken -- but before giving up on them I would give them a call. I am sure the Overhaul manuals are slower sellers than the Service Manuals -- and some years have everything in one manual, so the choices may be too complex for the on-line order forms. Give Eric or Gary a shout and see if they have or can get you an Overhaul Manual.Terry- Top
