    Differential Problem

Helping a friend out, we pulled out his differential on a 70 to replace the seals by the Half Shafts. Found that the passenger side had a frozen bearing and it wore into the housing. Is there anyway to repair this by putting a sleeve in. Has anyone done this or can you recommend someone to do this?

    Re: Differential Problem

Usually that is caused by a worn out axle. As soon as the face is worn past the case hardening they are soft and will wear down fast causing the yoke to "face" the 1/8" boss at the seal. If not correceted the axle will hit the seal.

I have also seen the bearing blown apart and welded into the bore once as well after someone welded the spiders to make a " spool" A machine shop should be able to sleeve it. If it's a real 70 diff carrier then it will have 3 letter stamping and be worth more to a collector as a result but in reality the 70 case is no better then a 71-79 so I would probably advise getting a new carrier and building one.

If you go with a used diff I would check it good if your intention is to just add oil and install it, most I get in are in bad shape and certainly not ready to install.

If you need help or have questions just PM me.

      Hi Gary,
Always enjoy reading your post. Just pulled this rear apart and low and behold, Bubba's positraction.

Ah yes the old weld it together for the drags trick. Works good for 30 seconds.
What are you going to use? Auburns aren't too good although cheap, the new loaded Eatons not much better with lousy fiber clutches & heavy springs, finding a good used posi is crap shoot, building a new posi out of good old USA parts is the way I go and it is the best option. Have fun.
