    1977 tires

i have a 1977 L82 4sp, the car came with firestone GR70 15. i still have the orignal spare and firestone but the 4 orignal tires were change before 1980 to goodyear HR60 15. i'm going back to a 225 70 15 with raised white letters. i was going to use the firestone firehawk but it doesen't say firestone on the tire anymore. it says firehawk indy 500. i was thinking about the goodyear eagle gt ll raised white letter tire since 77 vetts did come with goodyears on them also. the goodyear eagle gt ll looks closer to orignal style tire than the firestone (firehawk indy 500). how will the point deduction run on the goodyear vs the firestone.

Should be the same- standard deduct for correct OEM present day replacement tires.

i was look for a rock hard answer. i like the goodyear better but if i would get a lower point deduction for the firestone then i'll go with them. i'm ready to buy a set but can't seem to get a answer.

What does your judging reference manual say under 'standard deductions'?

The deduction is -60% because a 225-70-R-15 is not a GR-70-15 and the letters are not the same size or shape. Buy Firestone or Goodyear for best results but only Original tires score well and their are no reproductions.

yes i know that i'll get point deduction for a 225 70 15. i want to drive this car some so i dont wan't a 30 year old set of tires nor do i want 2 set of tires. the judgeing manuel i have said the 225 15 70 is the replacement for the GR70 15. the question i'm having would firestone get a lower point deduction than goodyear since the car came with firestone or would the point deduction be the same between goodyear or firestone. the lettering looks clooser to orignal on the goodyear than the firestone.
now from what u are saying, would the point deduction be the same for a 225 60 15 and the 225 70 15 because neither one is a GR70 15. others said i need the 225 70 15 for best results. i been trying to get ahold of our team leader but he's out of town and haven't given me an answer.

              Jay -

Nobody but you knows what the car came with, and your JG will tell you which manufacturers supplied which type of tire originally. Any 225/70-15 with an OEM supplier brand will be judged as a current-size service replacement.

You need a 225 70R 15 tire and it needs to be a Goodyear or a Firestone as they were the only original brands. I have taken a 60% deduction with either brand and this is where I think they fit on the chart. The chart was made and includes information on reproduction tires and bias ply tires which makes the choice of where 77 radials with a different size(numbers),tread width, lettering size and type fit the chart. Their is information in the archives on this subject. I think either brand will get the same deduction as the spare shown as original don't need to match.
