I am trying to determine if the metal molding piece on the top of the side doors of a 54 Vette is stainless or chromed metal.
I have the original pieces for my '54 and one has some slight rust on the back side. The piece looks like the stainless pieces that surround the seats but the rust on the back side makes me wonder if it is chromed metal. It would help to know so I will know whether I can polish it down as you would stainless.
From a google search, I noticed the caution that "if you see red rust on stainless steel, it may be due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting" Is this what I am seeing or are these pieces non-stainless.
Not to confuse my question, but were any of these peices (seat surrounds, windowshield surrounds, etc.) on any of the 53-67 Vettes "flash chromed"? I have heard this but am not familiar with whether this is true or even possible to "flash chrome" such a piece.
Thanks.
Charles
