C2 chalk marks - type of chalk

Hope this in not a silly question...Is the chalk used on the frame for shim marks just regular old chalk? (or something special)

Lumber crayons. They are used by sawmills to mark the boards.

Would this be true for engine markings as well? Long ago when I foolishly detailed my engine, it used to have what appeared to be a figure "8" or a hastily made "Zero" on the front of the left cylinder head. I stupidly cleaned it off and repainted it. We're talking 1976. Who knew better then?

There are faint green crayon shim markings on my 72, also green X's on the rear crossmember.

              1965 frame:

Quanta sells a (very expensive, considering the crap it contains) kit which will address all of your frame marking concerns.

Dick, We used the same ones (as in Quanta's kit Joe referred to) in the Firestone plants. Believed we called them "grease markers" in my CRS mind.

I cannot say for sure. I can say, however, that many report that white was used almost exclusively for the shim marks. Occasionally, an orange "slash" was placed on the the extreme fore and after ends of the rails. Green and orange was used for frame "pull dates".
Someone with photos of unrestored frames will surely respond.

That's great Dick as they can be purchased at Lowes and Home Depot as well however can others validate shim marks and frame pull date being another color other than white on mid year cars? Thanks.

when I detailed dads 67 frame I used a q-tip and some model paint. if you are careful you can make it look like a crayon marking. and it will last longer
