    Rekeying spare tire lock

In looking through my judging sheets and '67 judging manual, I think the spare tire lock key and the glove box key should be the same key (Briggs and Stratton round head type), right? The manual says "the interior compartment key" but I am assuming that means glove box to the layman.

    Michael,

Yes, your '67 glove box key should also operate the spare tire lock and yes they should be the roundish or pear-shaped key with a B letter keyway for '67.

I assume from the title of your posting that one key does not operate both your locks. Yes? If you have two separate keys that work those two locks, but if both keys have the B keyway, then it's easy to correct. Any locksmith can remove the core in either lock and change tumblers so one key works both.

If either lock is not a B keyway lock, then things become slightly more complicated and you'll need to find the correct B keyway core for one or both of your locks.

Thanks for the info, and yes they are both B keyway types but are different keys. So I will get to a locksmith with one of the tumblers and get 'er rekeyed.

Mike, I believe that the the two lock cylinders are keyed alike, I just had Gary Beaupre a NCRS member re-do my glovebox lock cylinder and spare tire lock, great guy to deal with. send him a email-garybeaupre@comcast.net

Michael - My experience is that you'll probably find the the glovebox lock didn't get changed so unless you know it's been changed, I'd suggest you check the glovebox lock cylinder (the internal part with the tumblers) for the KEY NUMBER (if it is the original GB lock cylinder it will be stamped on the side if the lock cylinder, so you'll have to remove the lock cylinder from the GB lock case to get the KEY #) and then key the spare tire lock to that KEY NUMBER. Micheal,

I concur with Pete. Nines times out of ten when such locks don't match up, it's the spare tire lock that's been replaced. Give me call some evening if you need instructions on how to remove the lock cylinder from the glove box lock case in order to see if the code number is stamped into the core. It's easy to do, but not completely obvious. All you need is #1 or #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the lock case from the door and a large paper clip to remove the lock core. My home number is 408-733-2845 (between 6PM and 9:30PM Pacific time).

Thanks for all the replies and help here. Lots of good references to get this done, I just wish the TI issues were as easy!
