I don't remember if the early production cars used plain brass or zincad plated fittings at the fuel filter. I think zincad?? Definitely not chrome though. The fittings are among the items that changed to chrome after 3 January.

Re: Chrome Engine Parts For 63.

From what I have observed the 1/8 x 5/16 fuel filter fitting was zincad plated steel. Same fitting as was/is used on the fuel bowl inlet fitting.
But as far as the 90 degree fitting goes I just use bare brass fittings. Same fitting that was used on the '62 FI fuel filter. Don't know if the finish is correct or not.

The 90 degree was later chrome plated. But I have seen a lot of them that appear to be industrial nickel. Yeah I know some of you don't agree. So use chrome then.

Re: Chrome Engine Parts For 63.

Would I be right to assume that the early L-76 (340 hp) air cleaners (base) were not chrome? Gosh! almost wish mine was an early build then because all the chrome on the inside of my air cleaner peeled off in the first couple of years. Once I noticed it starting to roll up I peeled it off myself (ask me why), but I'm sure some of it found it's way down my AFB into the engine during a WOT burst. That's ok though, cause like my 58 290 fuelie engine; each time I over heated it it ran better. Same with my L-76; it's unusually strong for what it is and I credit the extra bore finishing from that crappy chrome.

The air cleaner lid and base for all 340 HP engines were originally chrome. Even early production cars.

Was your car assembled prior to 3 January 63? If so, could you tell us about the fittings at the fuel filter? Natural brass or zincad plated. Thanks.

Re: Chrome Engine Parts For 63.

I probably should have stayed out of this thread. Sorry, I was just venting a long standing concern/frustration of mine. Mine was a 8 July build (ordered in April, delivered in August) so, of course, it had all the chrome fittings. The air cleaner, and its' design though, is just one poor example of what can happen when they rush an SHP engine to market using a single point distributor and an after thought PCV emission system. Besides the peeling chrome inside the air cleaner, with the lack of a flame arrestor I got to enjoy dodging my valve covers blowing off in my face during a crankcase explosion. It still smarts even though I corrected these design errors over the years to make it into a sweet running machine. For the record, my engine has never been apart except for repairs/replacement of the alternator, carburetor, water pump and starter with 46+k on the clock.

I have it here and will forward to you. The hand written date that the changes were effective in production is a little hard to read on the copy so I'll dig out the original and confirm the date.
Michael, if it is not too much trouble, could you e-mail me a copy also at: jgesundheit@sandhillmgmt.com Thanks

I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to send a copy to Tracy for the last two days. I've given up.

                I'll post it here instead.

Chrome engine items added to production on 3 January. Some parts are a little confusing at first. See the specific model identification/usage in the right column.

If this is too hard to read, I'll try to make it larger.

Mike, I right clicked on your Notice of Production Change. Then I saved it as a picture. Opened the pic. Then I was able to print it.
At one point after I opened the pic I was able to use my mouse to enlarge it as much as I desired. With a 32" monitor it makes it nice.
                    Thanks very much, John

JD.... I'm going to rescan the original and see if I can make it better.
