No schematic diagrams for Corvette until mid/late '70 era. Up until then all you get is the wiring diagram (what gauge/color wires connect the various 'black box' electrical components of the car).

But, I'll recite the schematic for you:

    (1) B+ through dash harnes to temp gauge.
    (2) Sender wire from dash harness to temp gauge.
    (3) Dash harness to engine harness via firewall connectors.
    (4) Engine harness to temp sender (a non-linear variable resistor).
    (5) Temp sender IS grounded by design and installation into the engine.

Temp gauge is essentially an ammeter measuring variable branch circuit current flow from the B+ through the gauge to the variable resistor that is the temp sender.

Per GM specs on the temp sender, replacing the temp sender with a 60-ohm resistor to ground should equal 230F on the gauge (with engine running, charging system active).

      Joe -

Have you checked for continuity of the sender wire through the multiple connector on the engine compartment side of the fuse block? Those terminals frequently become corroded and result in opens or intermittent connections.
