    1963 Corvette Hubcap

Does anyone know the VIN when the hubcaps had the centers frosted and when they were polished?

Judging guide states cars to VIN 2500 had frosted centers.

      Thanks Tom.
I am completing a frame off restoration of a Black Split with Red interior. I am getting to the final stages and want to be sure of the details. I really appreciate your help.

Another feature of original frosted hubcaps is the thicker perimeter rim. This is also noted in the JG. I think the over the counter replacement frosted hubcaps were the same as the polished ones only they were painted.

Original fosted cap on the left, polished cap on the right.

              Tracy,

I had no idea you could buy over the counter 63 caps. Did the production polished caps have a thick rim?

Not positive, but I can't imagine GM continuing production of the thick rim caps once the production change arrived on the scene. I'd say any thick rimmed cap that is fully polished now once was a frosted hubcap.

Joe Lucia has posted the part number changes on these caps before, check the archives for additional info.

Sorry for the delay, I was out of touch from my computer on a trip. It is number 4747.

Do you suppose the early "thick" rim hubcaps were less prone to rubber hammer dents?

                      Stu,

I've seen the typical hammer dings in both styles, so I'd say there is no advantage with either.

I have read that but wonder since my VIN 1948 has no evidence of the frosted area. You would think it would possibly still be frosted under the spokes to some extent.

As have I. A rubber mallet carefully used should not ding but I avoid them completely anyway:
A closed fist in a padded "workout" glove will pound the caps on without damage and I've done it for years.

I still found it interesting. Too much time on my hands.
