Thanks for the responses....... the current nose on the starter is an aluminum casting and it "fits", so it must be the right one....

Regarding the bendix drives..... was there a difference in the number/size of the teeth on these drives? I've been told there was no difference between the bendix drives used on the SB and BB starters and that they are interchangable.... Fact or fiction?

There were many different starter drive part numbers over the 57-87 (and, later) period. However, all have the same number of teeth regardless of whether they are used for 153 or 168 tooth flywheels and all are functionally interchangeable. In fact, I have NOS examples of all except one used over the 1957-87 period. When I get that one I'll do a little post on starter drives. However, I can tell you now that there is VERY little difference between all of them. Also, there is no such thing as a big block or small block-specific starter drive.

      Correct, correct and correct.
This is so simple, that sometimes people get confused.

Joe On the subject of 10,8 and 5 MT starters They are actually different series of starters with different designs. The 10MT is the series we deal with for the Corvettes. They are available as high torque, low torque and "conversion"(low torque fields with an extended lead and a high torque armature) from the factory. The 5 and 8 MT series are significantly different in appearance.

Thanks for that information. I was really not sure about the various designations and I'm glad you weighed in on it. Do you know what applications the 5MT and 8MT were used on?
