    Factory recalls on 63's

Is there any one place that I can look for "all" the recalls for the '63 on what I understand was the most recalled of all vettes? I'll appreciate your help. If there's no such list, can some of you advise me of what recalls there were? Again, thanks for the help.

    Jim,

The best sorce I have found is the NCRS Restorer CD. It's filled with great articles and there is one about 1963 TSB's.

Timothy: Thanks for your quick and useful reply. Interesting you should lead me to the Corvette Restorer which I just discovered yesterday will not operate on my new computer's operating system (Microsoft 7). Guess I'll be spending much time in the library since they are not as up to date as I am!! NCRS says they are working on that but it'll be later in 2010.
      Thanks again, Jim

        Hi Jim !

I left my newest edition of the 63 JG in my office, but i believe there are a pretty good amount of TSB's in the back of that too. Can't say for sure on recalls.

The dealership I worked for in 63-64 had NO recalls. There were TSB's, but, unless the customer had a specific complaint mentioned in the TSB ( which weren't read a lot of times ) nothing was done. Recalls came a lot later. In 63 the dealers were still getting used to the idea of a warranty.

As mentioned the 5th edition has a HUGE amount of TSB's. From page 157 to page 238. Covers mostly 63 though. The 64 guys only have a few to read.
Most comprehensive list I have ever seen in one place.
Didn't see any recalls though. In the old days you didn't hear much in the news about recalls probably because there wasn't any PC crap on my favorite Corvette.
If there was a recall it had to be for water leaks. JD

Ken Anderson makes a good point. We need to get our terminology correct so that we ALL know what each other are talking about.

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin -- There are NOT recalls. TSBs are merely advice to the dealer about how to fix known issues that customers may bring to their attention.

When they came about recalls were, and still are, called Campaigns by the auto manufacturers. Campaigns require the manufacturer to notify the car owner of a defect and offer free repair.

FYI, the NHTSA has recalls for only 2 Chevrolete vehicles for the 1963 model year. They are the Corvair and Chevrolet truck. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/recallsearch.cfm and no service bulletins in their database.

And those NHTSA recalls could not have happened until at least 1968, which I think is the year it was legislated into existance.

The word "recall" in the context we are referring to here did not exist in 1963. IIRC the warranty was 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever occurred first.

For any failures beyond the warranty period it was up to the customer to negotiate for assistance, and he could probably get some kind of deal (like GM would pick up the parts if the customer paid the labor) if he knew there was a high failure rate for the part(s) in question, but TSBs were not available to average customers.

In today's world I think there are two animals - "service campaigns" and "recalls".

Service campaigns are usually for non-safety related parts where there is a high failure rate. Recalls usually involve something that effects vehicle safety.

In either case customers are notified by mail to bring their car to the dealer for inspection and any required rework.
