    Door Horn

Here's one for the ages. I am in the process of finishing a frame off restoration of a 1970. Today I connected the battery for the first time to start the engine. To my suprise, I opened the drivers door and the horn went off. This car does NOT have an alarm system. When I closed the door the horn quit. When I open the door and push in the courtesy lamp button, the horn quits. WHERE COULD THE SHORT BE? I disconnected the wires at the horns and successfully got the car to start beautifully. But the horn still bothers me. HELP!!!!

    Thanks.

Sounds like you've got an electrical gremlin to track down and kill... The main door jamb switch should trigger ONLY the interior/courtesy lamps and the key minder warning buzzer (located in the horn relay).

      Jim,

My question would be...does the key buzzer work? You could have wires switched going into the horn relay. If you used new harnesses check th old terminals on the original harness, sometimes the new harnesses have them switched.

There was post recently on the lectric limited harnesses about a wire harness problem with wires routed incorrectly. must be a colored blind assembley worker.

I have seen more than one post on this problem.

Rich,I think you may have hit on the nose.these type of problems can end in countless hours to find a needle in a haystack, so to speek.

Jim, the harness I believe that Rich is refering to is under the column.Rich correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the input. Carrying the situation further, with the door closed I can hit the horn button and all I get is a buzzing horn relay. This is an old harness so the Lectric Limited solution would not be the case. I'm not sure if it is the original harness or one that was replaced years ago. I suspect it is original. I did run a continuity test on it while out of the car and everything checked out. No breaks in the wires. Although its a new horn relay, could it be bad? I'll check to make sure I don't have the wires crossed.

          Thanks again guys,
          Jim

            Jim,

check you wireing diagram and look I'll bet dollars to donuts the horn wire and buzzer wire are switched going into the horn relay. They are supposed to have special tangs and terminals to prevent this but it has been done before.

              Jim,
I have a '68, not a '70. If on your car the horns work when you open the door, then the horn relay must be good. If when you hit the horn button you get a buzzing sound that you attribute to the horn relay, couldn't the buzzing be coming from the key in/door open buzzer? This scenario assumes the wiring on your car is back asswards. The door buzzer on my '68 is rather barely audible and could be confused with a buzzing horn relay. Just a thought.
              Best regards,

I'm almost finished with putting in a new complete Lectric Limited wiring harness and there have been more then a few mistakes they made with their products. They will not stand behind there stuff so buyer beware.
