    Chroming question

I'm sending my air cleaner cover out to be re-chromed shortly. It and the wingnut is pitted pretty bad. My question is; is it worthwhile getting the wingnut rechromed or should I simply replace it?

Has anyone had this done recently? Suggestions on chromers? Cost?

    Thanks!

    Chroming question

    Lynn,

What year is your car? Does you air cleaner cover have a silk screen on the underside? If so, I was just wondering how you're going to deal with that vis-a-vis the plating.

      Re: Chroming question

      It's a '72, no silkscreen.

        Re: Chroming question

I had my lid redone by Richard Fortier.

        AWSOME JOB!!!

Has the factory flash chrome look/feel.
I am sure he can rechome the wing nut for you too.

Best money I have spent on chrome work ever.

Just a FYI -- I got his exhaust tips too, looks great.

He has his chrome guy pay great attention to detail. He actually had mine re-done becuase it had to much shine to it.....

I will look for his ph# and post it later.

You will not be dissapointed at all.....

PS -- cost was around $200 - $250, depending on the condition.

          Air cleaner lid re-chroming recommendation

I'll second Bill's recommendation of Richard Fortier. Richard definitely knows what is correct in terms of the GM-quality that judges look for. It's not cheap, but getting it done right, the first time, makes it worth the money in my opinion.

I just spoke to Richard as well to have my 68 original rechromed, he mentioned he recently updated the silk screen printing to be more accurate (for those who need it). Great guy to talk to!!!

              Re: Chroming question

I had my original wing nuts re-chromed and also had them tape the inside of the air cleaner lid. Everything turned out GREAT.

I did ask for triple plated chrome though due to some minor pitting, if I had went flash chrome it would have showed more. With the triple plated you can't see any plus they probably did a great job cleaning them up which all my pieces valve covers, lid, shielding was in over all good shape anyway.

So, yes go that route intead of repro stuff.

                Re: Chroming question

Interesting about the pitting needing triple plating to bring it back to life, mine is quite pitted. That may be the route for me to take.

In terms of turn around, how loong did Mr. Fortier take to get the job completed and was the time as expected? Earlier today I spoke with Paul's chrome, in other threads many have reccomended them, they said 5-6 weeks, I was hoping to get this done more quiickly.

I know... I waited to the last muinite.

                  Lynn,

                  Don't know Richard's current backlog -
but he had mine done in about 3-4 weeks.
That included shipping time and work.

                  WELL WORTH the time.....
Give Richard a call - he can provide his schedule....

Brandon, did the application of tape result in a finish that revealed any evidence that the area had been taped over when the plating was done?
                    Best regards,

                        Re: Chroming question

Thanks for all the input it has been very helpful along with a little research in the archives. I believe I've come to the conclusion that I don't think I want to invest this heavily on an air cleaner lid that will sit on top of a non-origional engine and I don't forsee being flighted in the forseeable future anyway. I do have two questions though.

                        1. Did my '72 LS-5 come from the factory with any silkscreening at all?

There was mention of this in the archives and my lid has none. I initially felt that the lid was origional based only on it's age indicated by the the significant pitting it has. If I decide at some point to get it re-chromed I'd like to insure that it is origional.

                        2. Who makes the best/most correct reproduction today?

I only saw comments on Paragon's lid.

                          Re: Chroming question

                          1. No, and the TIM&JG is quite clear on this.

                          2. I have only seen Paragon's product, and I am not sure there is any another. I think their silk screen leaves something to be desired -- it is too thin. But then you don't need the silk screen. Most of those I see had "show chrome" -- too briliant -- on them. Guys just can't resist the bling.
