    Flame Arrestor Function

What does it actually do or prevent? I read different definitions but would like to know in laymans terms. What would happen without it being installed?

I think that it stops a flame (from backfire etc..) from being sucked into the breather tube -
    not 100% sure though.

The PCV system creates suction in the engine and air is pulled through the breather tube.

    Just my best guess.......

It prevents a carburetor backfire from propagating into the crankcase, where an explosion could occur because most blowby is combustible unburned fuel-air mixture.

Some years ago I posted a more detailed explanation (see archives), and it was also published in The Corvette Restorer.

I wonder why the '67 L-36 with A.I.R. and all '67 3x2's (A.I.R. or not) omitted the flame arrestor?

          Re: Flame Arrestor Function

A flame arrester reduces the temperature of the flame going thru it, so that there will not be enough temperature to support combustion on the outside of the flame arrester.

Does anyone know of if a reproduction of this unit is available for a 71 base engine? Mike

Corvette America lists a flame arrestor for a 68 to 72 Corvette air cleaner.
              PN 22389 at $8.99 each.

Will the judges make a deduction if you have one on a 67 L-71?
