    Front Spring Rates

Does anyone have the front coil spring compression rates for the various springs used in 1967 and 1968 or 1969? I'm trying to determine if using a spring from a 68 would help to overcome the typical spring droop in a 67 BB. I've replaced the springs with "correct" new ones and after a period of time the droop returned.

    Steve -

    '67 base BB spring (3888250): 195#/inch
    '67 BB w/C60 spring (3888251): 224#/inch
    '67 F40 spring (3832518): 550#/inch

Don't have the '68 spring specs; if someone has the '68 "Restoration Package" from GM, they're in it, in the "Chassis" section.

If it will help, can quote the various spring rates ("x" lb/in) from the '68 P&A catalog (4 different '67 spring part #s and 4 different for '68). But you'd also need the free height, etc. Also have the parts catalogs for '69.

I'm currently going through a similar head-scratcher wrt '65 L78. None of the P&A's mention this RPO as taking anything other than the standard 3851110 (assumed by lack of mention). The AIM also does not mention a special front spring for the 396 [std suspension]. But the '65 Tech manual DOES call for 3888250, so they must have derived this from examination of factory original cars. Still, you'd think the parts catalogs would have caught this omission (if it was one) after a year or two (or 5) .

          Re: Front Spring Rates

Bill and John, Thanks for the info. Wayne is correct; the unloaded height also enters into the equation. I have the overall height for the following including info from John and Bill:

          1967 #3888250 BB 195#/in. 17" height.
          1967 #3888251 BB w/C60 224#/in.
          1967 #3832518 F41 550#/in. 12.25" height.

          1968 327 250#/in
          1968 427 284#/in

It would be interesting to know the height of the 68 BB spring

The AMA specs have design (installed and loaded) height (9.99 inches); no free height.
