    C4 engine removal

    Hello Everyone,

Any pointers, tips, etc. with regards to removing the engine/trans from an 84. I've got the 84 service manual for the proceedure, I just looking for advise from others that have done it already.

    Thank you

    Re: C4 engine removal

Kurt I have an 1985. I have owned it since 1992 and have not attemped to remove the engine. If I were to do it, I would for sure not remove the hood. I did remove the engine and replace the engine in my 1970 and did not remove the hood and only removed the engine leaving the turbo 400 supported and in me 70. I did not even remove the radiator or radiator shroud to remove the 70's engine. Piece of cake really. If I was going to remove the engine in my 1985, I would just support and leave the automatic transmission in the car and remove the engine if it could be done this way.

Kurt, the C4 engine will be a little tuffer than the prev. generations, good advice is to take some pic.s of the placements of things like the engine brackets and wiring placements, clips hoses and there routing, fuel lines, mark all nuts and bolts as there are removed and noting the directions they faced.(baggys really help with this).remember that everything that is plastic such as the wire harness retainers ,wire harness conduit will be old and is generally brittle to much flexing will cause breakage. the same goes with all the wire harness connectors, anything near or about the exhuast manifolds will be even worst.

pentatrating oil is something you will need when it comes to exhaust manifold nuts- many coatings- torches work the best though.

hoping you have a automatic car because this make the removal and install easier. std trans cars in a C4 maker for removel and install tuffer. and more patience is needed.

Kurt if you have any more question PM me. also forgot 84 was auto only, I think 85 had the 4+3
