    re coil advice

I am getting my engine back from being rebuilt. The mechanic mentioned my coil had rust in were the distributor pickup wire goes . He seems to
think I should buy a new one . Any advice on a coil ? Large range of prices 327 300+ horse 365 solid lifter cams . I have taken points out and replaced with electronic. vacuume advance not working .
At this point I might require a new distributor. Is their a HEI that will fit
under shielding with mechanical tac ? looking at msd . I don't want the type with the red large coil.
Any feedback appreciated before I spend .

Wayne, are you talking about the tower of the coil where the coil wire plugs into?if so sometimes you can use a dremel tool to clean the tower, its seems a shame to take away from the look of a original style coil.

As for the dist. I Like the electronic set ups they make today that fit under the original style dist. caps, I would buy a new vaccum can and leave it as is.( there cheap)

Also, if you look down inside the tower, you'll see the wire connector mounts to the coil assy with a small slot-head screw. Soak the screw with 'rust buster' penetrating oil, remove the screw and the connector will slip out.

You can either clean off existing corrosion or replace the connector with a fresh/clean one from a decent donor coil...

BTW, if you go this route, do NOT invert the coil or the cooling oil inside will run out!

        Wayne -

The distributor is a simple device, and it's easily rebuilt in an afternoon (if it needs it). No HEI will fit under the shielding.

            Wayne,

Save your money and clean/lube the distributor. Install a breakerless SE from M&H with a properly taylored vacuum advance control. Make sure all the secondary ignition parts are OEM and installed properly.

This will probably work for you but will obviously not look correct.

As others said, rebuilding the distributor is a fairly simple task. When I did mine, It was because the vacuum advance can (VAC) was bad. As a result other issues were corrected that I wasn't trying to fix by replacing the VAC. It made a huge difference in how the car ran.
              Good luck!
