    1971 SB Heat Riser Repop

I just got off the phone with Ron from Gardner Exhaust Systems and he told me GM is no longer producing heat risers. Ron is going to try and locate one for me but I am curious if anyone has ever compared a GM heat riser to a repop. I am just getting started with putting my LT-1 back on the road after a 20+ year nap in the garage and my goal is to make it as close to "original" as possible as I go along. Thanks

    Scott,

You will want to find a NOS heat riser.
If possible, one made 10+ years back (old GM NOS)....

The repops are cheap china crap. The rod/pin that the flapper is welded to is much smaller diameter than the originals. It can warp and lock the plate.
Also - I had one that was not drilled straight and they ground the end of the pin to make it fit.

The older ones are drilled in a press and completely side to side. After the rod/pin is installed and the flapper welded in place a end cap is peened into the opening without the counter weight.

I learned all this the very hard way.
The repro I purchased was from a very reputable reseller, so it was not them, just the china crap they are being supplied.

    Hope this helps some..

I don't know that GM EVER manufactured heat riser valves. The last available small block valve, GM #362652, has nothing on it to indicate that it's even a GM-supplied part, although earlier valves did have GM embossments on them. From what I can tell, the 362652 is exactly the same as many that can be purchased in the aftermarket. This valve has been the only one available from GM for over 30 years. I show it as still being available but it's possible it was very recently discontinued.

        Bill, Joe,

Thanks very much for the information, it's very helpful. I will see what I can find NOS.
