    GM Availability Mr Lucia

    Joe,

Is there anyway you can put a list together of 63-67 original appearing parts that are still available from GM. I have two cars that will take 10 yrs to complete and would like to buy what's still available in system.

For example I just found in a past thread 25628204 shock washer was available and ordered 30 from my favorite dealer.

If the list it too long then maybe top 10 choices or something. I'm sure this would be very helpful for others.

    Thanks
    Jeff

Jeff, I found a way to do it online a few years ago for my 62 project. It's still available, and I did it for a 63 moments ago. You can't do a range of years, just a individual year though.

    http://www.gmpartsdirect.com

Click on "Restoration" (same line as the SEARCH bar)

Step through the input fields entering your make, model, year info.

When you get to Category, select "Show All Categories" at the bottom of the list and you'll get every part available for that model year.

p.s. Joe, sorry I jumped in on this but this method was really helpful for me.

In 2003 GM put out a Corvette anniversary CD. In addition to pictures etc, it had a listing of available GM restoration parts. The data base can be searched by year, parts type, individual part #, etc - it also lists parts grouped by year group etc.

I am away from my home for a while and I don't have the GM part number for the disk with me. (Home in a couple of weeks.) The on-line version is probably your best bet if you need something in a hurry. Restoration parts may-or-may not look like originals.

I'm glad you did jump in because it would have been difficult and time consuming for me to put together the requested list. I've never done a search the way you described, though, so I'll also find that interesting to try.

However, as far as original-appearing parts which remain available from GM, I would say, off-hand, that the list will be VERY short for a 1967. As a matter of fact, the list will be very short even for much later model years, let alone 1967.

          All------

I did a search as Rich described for a 1963 Corvette. I performed a cursory review of all the GM parts that came up on that list. I can say that the VAST MAJORITY of the parts listed would be SERVICE-ONLY as far as 1963 Corvettes are concerned. They are not original part numbers and they would not be configured as-original but they would be 100% functional.

There were a relatively small number of parts that are of the original part numbers. It's unlikely that many, if any, of these would remain configured and appear exactly like the originals. With only a few exceptions (like the shock washer mentioned in the first post and which is a much-later replacement part number) the only chance of getting a part that appears like the original would be one of the original part number. However, I cannot say which, if any, of those listed and of the original part number remain exactly like the originals since I do not know what the parts currently being supplied under those part numbers are like.

Rich: thanks for the "how to", worked perfectly.

Joe: went through same 63 search and crossed referenced with 63 AIM. Found 12 part numbers that haven't changed. As you said part appearance will be different. Just curious if anyone has purchased below and compared to original.

3813226 AIM 7/C2 clutch return spring
3743349 AIM 7/C1 clutch lever ball seat
3750696 AIM 7/C1 clutch lever ball stud retainer spring
            3770529 AIM 6/A2 engine fan
            3744043 AIM 6/A2 crank pulley
3767804 AIM 8/5 gage to tank gasket screw
3774937 AIM 8/2 fuel tank locking cam
3825451 AIM 6/A4 generator mounting spacer
3797115 AIM 11/11 hood latch release cable
3824160 AIM 1/B9 instrument panel pad clip
3831587 AIM 4/2 rear spring cushion
3817657 AIM 6/C7 spark plug head shield
3841701 AIM 10/4 spare tire lock cover
            3840083 AIM 1/B22 washer reservoir
The most interesting is side emblem 3872930 which replaced 3827158 is still available. Kind of pricey at $80.

            Thanks

Jeff, What's interesting about the 3872930 is that it lists for $130! Discount is $80 but if you do a checkout and it adds $18 s&h.

Two+ years ago I went through a list for my 62. I bought many pieces from my local GMC dealer at a discount. I don't have the list & part#'s in front of me but I recall a few....

3711840 - Rear Brake cables - close, but not identical to original. List $50ea

              3706146 - Front Brake cable - same. List $55

4 spark plug shields - similar(see pic) - I see 3817657(lr/rf) is still available but not the (rr/lf)
Not sure if they're like original, but they sure were expensive. List is $40 for the 657.

3747942 - Interior mirror base. I bought 2, one for my 59. - Very close to my original. No duduct at a Regional on my 59. List $64

A word of caution may be in order in regard to the definition of GM RESTORATION PART. It means the part will be fuctional. It does not mean it is the original design in all cases. If the part is judged visually, then further research is needed to determine if the GM RESTORATION PART is the same as the original design. I have returned several parts (and paid shipping charges both ways) in the process of learning this lesson. Even the same part number ( such as an oil filter or air filter) may look totally different depending on the date of manufacture.

Although all of the parts shown come up under the "Restoration" tab of the GMPartsDirect web-site, these are not actually parts which are part of the GM Restoration Parts Program (GMRPP). These are all parts which are still available through regular GMSPO channels. GM makes no guarantee that these parts are actually restoration parts, per se. They are simply parts which may or may not be of the original part number but which will SERVICE the application. Even those of the original part number may not be exactly configured as-original.

The GM Restoration Parts Program is simply a licensing entity which enables parts manufacturers to sell parts with GM trademarks, including part numbers, and with specification and tooling support from GM. I have found that parts available through this program can vary markedly from the originals.
