    '69 T. I. wiring question.

Hi all, just wondering if the pink ignition wire goes through the firewall to the white wire or does the white wire go through the firewall to the pink wire? Thanks,Graeme.

    Re: '69 T. I. wiring question.

The pink wire comes out of the ignition and plugs into a white wire just inches before it goes into the firewall to the engine compartment, this white wire is a resistance wire. On the engine compartment side you'll see the white wire, which looks like a white cloth type wrapping come out of the firewall and disappear into the TI wiring harness. What it does from there is run down the wiring harness to just before the radiator, if you follow the harness you'll feel a clump wrapped up there. At that point the white wire links into the pink wire coming from the TI amp box and heading back up the TI harness where it is seen coming out the wiring harness at the same spot the white wire went in to the harness. So you should see at the top of your harness, nearest the Distributor five wires (if my memory is correct, it was last week when I did this) that appear to be coming out of the harness, a pink wire and a gray wire that connect to the plug to the distributor, a black wire that is the ground that goes onto the negative pole on the coil, the white wire that came out of the firewall from the ignition (remember the pink wire from the ignition) and another white wire that goes to the positive pole on the coil. Now, that last white wire is not the same white wire that came out of the ignition and headed down the harness, noooo that would be too easy. This second white wire started out as the black wire coming out of the three wire plug to the amp box, it connects to the black wire as a resistance wire then continues up the harness to the coil. Yes there are two black wires leaving the TI amp box, one leaving from an exterior screw on the amp box as a ground (headed for the coil) the other as a part of the three wire plug that connects to the white resistance wire (connection hidden in the harness wrapping) then spits out to the positive on the coil.

Dave Fiedler has a diagram on his site at this link: http://www.tispecialty.com/articles/66-71diagram.htm

I just went through this last week. About that diagram, the pink wire coming out of the ignition and plugging into the white gives the impression that it is connecting to the pink again right near the plug to the distributor but that connection is actually way down the harness. I was little confused by that as a previous owner had pulled the original TI distributor in mine and hooked up a mallory, he left the harness but I wasn't sure if the harness had been butchered so I unraveled the electrical tape in a few key spots to trace all that wiring down.

That's probably clear as mud but go back and check it out on your harness and if you have more questions maybe I can narrow it down...I only aggravated myself for two days with that wiring only to get it through my head that the diagram wasn't meant to give anything remotely close to a scale of where the connections were, just that there were connections. I did say to myself "wow Wayne, you sure made that harder than it was".Those black and white wires shifting to white and pink colors buried in the harness make for a bit of an illusion.

Wayne, your a legend. Fantastic description of the wiring setup in the T.I. loom.Who would of thought of that??
I felt like pulling my harness apart just to check but I'll take your word.
O.K- Pink inside, White through firewall.
      Many thanks, Graeme from OZ.
