    Air Filter help !

I need a filter element for my 65. It is a A/C A165C. I cannot find one through A/C , NAPA/WIX, FRAM, PUROLATOR OR Fleetguard. Any idea where I can get a new element, i'm sure I am not the first to run into this. Thanks Tom

Corvette Central has it for $50, part#152016. Foam element, right?

I don't know if it is foam or not. I don't have one to compare to. Mine is missing. I think it would be a paper element but I don't know for sure? Tom

According to the replacement guide, the paper element one is AC A212CW, and it was used on the '65 396 and the '66-'70 for all open element air cleaners. The A165C was used on the 327 with the snorkle air cleaner.

Tom -- this is what you'll need but you'll NEVER find an NOS one now. Got this back in the early '80s; now turned to dust . there's a paper element GM replacement, good for a driver (the AC number escapes me now, but it's something like AC-353) drops right in the air cleaner housing.

            Is this what you need?

              Hi Tom,

Assuming your filter is the same size as that in my '65 365 hp (and I'm pretty sure it is), you should be able to use a disposable Wix 42070 (for driving purposes, of course, not judging). See the link below for measurements. NAPA carries an equivalent as well.

Wix makes NAPA and Carquest filters. You can just take the Wix # to either and they can cross it for you.

Right, and if you get the NCRS correct-for-judging A165C foam element you will also need the screen. But if you don't care about judging go with the Wix paper substitute.

If you care about your engine, make sure you don't use the reproduction A165C for anything other than judging. The A165C was a miserable excuse for an air cleaner and, fortunately, GM figured this out fairly early-on (but not as early as they should have). The GM #6419399, aka A165C, was discontinued from SERVICE in November, 1968 and replaced by the GM #6484399, aka, A353C. The latter is a cellulose fiber (paper) filter and it will filter air WAY BETTER than the A165C.

The GM #6484399 has been discontinued now. However, you should be able to get an equivalent replacement from other manufacturers. However, you'll need to cross reference from the 6484399 or A353C part numbers. The A165C is such an "ancient" part number that I doubt that any cross reference guides will recognize it.

Right, I suspect it was just a terrible as the foam one I have (for judging only, a K&N otherwise) on my L71 with the triangular air cleaner. Why they put those foam things on is beyond me.

                        Tom -

Long Island reproduces the A165C now, and the support screen.
