Re: Through what media did you buy your vette?

Got married in 1978. Just after getting married, wife mentioned that she always had wanted a Corvette. We looked at pictures and decided she/we liked the 70-72 models the best. Looked around Eureka, CA, and found nothing. I went to my work on base in Alameda after a weekend in Eureka and saw a red '71 parked at the exchange. A/C, auto, base engine, and power windows, painted an awful enamel red with tons of overspray, tattered interior, 96K miles, had turbine style aluminum alloy wheels, headers and sidepipes, and a distributor without a tach-drive so the tach didn't work. The wife wanted a Corvette, though, so I bought the Corvette for $4500 in August 1978 and it's been with us ever since. Told the kids that, if times ever got rough, we'd have to sell them first because the Corvette had seniority (no, just kidding on that one!). Through the years, learned a lot about our '71 and have done a lot to bring it back to as close to "factory correct" as we can. It's amazing to think we have owned that car for over 31 years. It was with us in CA, VA, FL and WA and currently has a little over 123K miles. It went back to the original lacquer red in 1980 with less, but still some, overspray. It got a major mechanical overhaul in 2003. We put 400-500 miles on it each year.

Bought my 71 from the employee of a Bloomington Gold judge who also ran a business near where I lived at the time.

Bought the 72 from a friend who couldn't stand to own a car he couldn't tinker with and was too nervous to drive (and I took it on to get a couple Top Flights and a Bowtie).

Bought the 08 new through our NCRS MI Chapter sponsor and picked it up at the museum.

All were purchased through contacts/word of mouth and not through any print or electronic media at all.

you have me looking at titles and invoices i have not looked at in 30 years! my first two corvettes were purchased from KING Corvette located in lansing, illinois. the first was a 1960 that i purchased on 2-21-77 for $3200. they gave me a $200 trade in allowance on my 1968 convertible rs camaro. the next is my 1974 corvette conv., which KING purchased new and raced at US 30 drag strip. they made out pretty good on that car. on 4-15-74 they paid $7279 and four years later sold it to me for $8000. still have the 74, but only start it once a year and occasionally put air in the 30+ year old tires!

I purchased my 69 from a lady I saw cruising Van Nuys Blvd back in 1978 then I bought my neighbors 68 which was the car that turned me on to corvettes when he drove it home new in 1968. I was 8 at the time and it made an impression that stuck.

Nov., 1964; A Chevy salesman friend told my Dad he knew a guy who had a '57 for sale and he had to sell it to buy his friend's '64 FI, KO's, silver/red coupe. His friend had to sell the '64 because he had a '65 just like it on order from the dealership.

Aug., 1976; Ordered '77 from a dealer friend.

Sep., 1977; ordered '78 SA from same dealer friend.

Apr., 2010; They are all in my garage today.

Bought the 64 from a private party. A good friend of my Dad's ran a Shell station and had worked on it and knew that it was for sale. The guy was getting a divorce and had to sell it.

Bought the 78 from a Pontiac dealer.

Bought my 63 new from dealer in Jefferson, WI (now long gone). Still display a copy of my window sticker on the passenger window for shows. It shows $4,666.65 new list. Just like at the Old Town cruise last night, I get lots of offers for $5,000. and have to explain they could add a zero to the price and still not be close. To the nicer folks I confess that I only paid $4,178.71 incl. tax and license so I wouldn't want to take advantage of them. That sticker sure evokes a lot of conversation. Had one offer from a fellow who wanted to trade me even up for a 2008 BMW 730? (wasn't interested so not sure of model). Another wanted me to run it down to Barrett-Jackson in Palm Beach today (?) where he assured me I'd get $100k.

Bought all my classic cars through well known, reputable, long time dealers who had a track record and you could trust to know the cars. I think anything else is risky. Oops, almost forgot, I did buy my '64 from the original first owner in 2008, a little old lady from Long Beach (true story) who had it since new and had all the paperwork from original, she had die and the son was selling from the estate. But that risk was worth taking, there was not another one like it I have ever seen after 15 years of looking, and I wanted the exact duplicate to the one I had in High School.

                          Hi,
I drove by on my lunch hour and bought my 71 off the showroom floor. Neel Chevrolet was a VERY small dealership in Eldersburg Md. As I remember it, the showroom held 1 car and I believe there were 2 lifts and 2 other bays in the service department.
                          Regards,
                          Alan

1968-Private Sale along the road find. We bought our 68 as a second car for my wife 28 yrs ago. Drove it for several years as a second car and then parked it for the next twenty after redoing the drive line and painting, It sat in my garage for twenty yrs without the interior in it. Kids growing up, college etc, 2007 we put the interior in it. I love this car.

1967-Friend new of a friend, Private sale 2007. I use to walk by this 67 coupe everyday when I was 14 (forty years ago) on my way to high school everyday. Was looking for a 67 coupe in 2007 and a friend told me of a 67 coupe that had been in a local garage for ever. Low and behold I found that same car sitting in a garage 10 miles from my house. It sat there for 25 years. 43600 miles, every nut and bolt correct except the heater hoses and clamps. Being closed up with the hot summers in Pa did its share of damage. Ask the fellow if he wanted to sell it, he said no, gave him my name and number. Six months later he called and now its in my garage.

2005-Dealer in 2005. I use to think if it didn't have chrome bumpers it wasn't a corvette. Boy was I wrong.

                            2007 (Zo6)- Dealer in 2007. Two words-Race Car

1998 Conv- Private Craigs List 2009. Went to St Charles auction last summer to buy this exact car. Car we wanted went for to much. Came home found exact car on craigs list. 2 hrs from the house, One owner 14600 mile car. Whished I could have bought his 58. Not for sale yet!

I bought my '60 from a private owner in '68 for $1,300. Red with white coves and white hard top, still my heart throb. Bought my '65 Convertible 327 / 365 hp with side exhaust from a dealer in '70 and drove it to death all over the USA (aka Dina Shore) Sold it and was in seller's remorse. Walked into Haven Chevrolet and looked at a '71 Steel City's Grey Convertible. The salesman walked over to me, I was a young man then and said, nice car but you can't afford it. He walked away and I did too.

I drove to H&B Chevrolet in Flushing, NY the same day and put $540 bucks down on a LS5 coupe which I still have and drive today. My only regret was that I did not have enough money to order the LS6 option, but at the time it was not an option for a 23 year old And still crazy after all these years!
