    Old Membership Member Number ??

    Hey all !!

I have an old friend who I just got back into the NCRS after many years. They issued him a new number in the 51000 range. There is no record of him ever being a member in the past. We have both contacted the main office and a search came up empty. He would love to have his old number back. We just can't seem to find it. My guess is maybe he was sent these items as a sample ??? Did NCRS ever mail these out to try and recruit new members who may have signed up for a mailer at a show or swap meet ??

He has all of these old mailings in his name from the mid 70's. Could he have received these mailings and not have been a member back then ?? There are member rosters in these mailings and he appears on none of them ?? Any ideas ??

That was my first thought too. Nothing appears on the mailers. Only the return address and my friend's address hand written on the envelope.

One of the documents is a 1976 membership roster. Does his own name does not appear?

There were no membership numbers back then. In a cursory glance through my old Drivelines, it looks like the membership numbers were assigned about 1990-1991. I know they were kept before then, but didn't appear on mailing labels, etc. until then. It was at that point that I became aware that I was #211--before that none of us had bragging rights other than the first 7 who started the organization.

Return address is from Tom Essig from Goshen, Indiana.

Doesn't it appear from these mailings that he was indeed a member ?? It's not a huge deal, but seems a mystery as to why he doesn't show up in any records or rosters.

That always bugged me. I joined sometime early 1980 (as I'm reminded at renewal time ), but here's some Restorer/Driveline mailing labels from 1987 period [Canadian issues were delivered in manila envelopes], and I see 1282 upper left and 588 upper right (the latter was my expiry date, back then).

I always thought that # 1282 was my member number, but I inquired to those responsible and the reply was NO, my member # is 3437.

So what is the 1282, then .

                    Mike,
                    I don't want to start a war -- and I know I couldn't with you anyway -- BUT:

In 1979 (it says 1980, but I am sure it was 1979, or even earlier -- but I would have to find the cancelled check to prove it) when I joined I got a membership number. In the 1990 or so range I got a new membership number -- higher than the first one. The story in the '90s was that the membership numbers were reorganized to reflect the time one joined the organization. I was told some went up, as I did, and some went down. Prior to the ‘90s some of the membership

I suspect you were early enough that maybe your number didn't change, and you simply noticed the "new technology" of the mailing labels with the membership number and expiration date on it.

BTW: The earliest back issues I got, which included that 1976 Membership Roster came from Lincoln, NB. If you got it from Tom Essig, that is way back in the cave man days.

I joined in 1976 and probably still have the mailings shown above. Seems unlikely that he would get the 6 different mailings pictured above without being a member..and thus would have an early membership #.

                        Terry, et al--------

That's exactly what happened. In fact, I talked about it with Gary Mortimer at Bloomington, as I recall. I joined in 1988 and sometime shortly after that I noted that my number had changed. I asked Gary about it at the NCRS booth in ABOUT 1990 and he told me that they had re-numbered all the members according to the date they joined.

I expect (but don't know) that they assigned the new numbers consecutively according to the join date of members that were still active members at that time. If so, they didn't assign numbers to members that had dropped out. Under this scenario, there would be no number assigned to folks who were not active members at the time the change was made and, in effect, "they would lose their place in line". If they re-joined later, they would have to get a new number based upon the time they re-joined. The only way that they could get a lower number would be if they were assigned a number from a member who was active at the time of the numbering change but who had since dropped out or passed away.

Of course, it's also possible that consecutive numbers were assigned to everyone that had been a member, regardless of whether they dropped-out, or not. In that case, there should be a number for the person in question here and that number could, theoretically, be re-assigned to him. If the system works this way, the office should be able to easily come up with the number originally assigned to him.

I, for one, would like to know just how the numbers were re-assigned. At the time of the numbering change were both active and inactive (i.e. dropped out, stopped paying dues, etc.) members assigned consecutive numbers or were only those members active at the time of the change assigned consecutive numbers?

Joe, was told member numbers were assigned per the "paper records", which included all current and past members IIRC. Gary....

Re: Old Membership Member Number ??

I joined in April 1981 and I too received a second number later. I thought, probably wrong, that when I joined, if an individual did not continue their membership their number was recycled. Therefore, I think I received a lower number of some prior member when I first joined and after the re-numbering I went to my present higher number of 4489.

                            Only my clouded recollections.
