Can anyone explain why GM switched the design? For those of us restoring original 1st design calipers, is there safety or performance reason for us to have them switched to 2nd design during rebuild?

My speculation is that the reason was cost reduction. The 1st design calipers and pistons would have been considerably more expensive than the 2nd design. For street application there probably wasn't enough, if any, advantage to the 1st design to justify the extra cost.
