    R&R Q-Jet Accelerator Pump - 1974 #7044206

I wish to replace my current accelerator pump with a Cliff Ruggles' Viton version, at hand. Is it a simple matter of removing the air horn and popping it in. The Doug Roe book speaks of "positioning" the upper spring retainer but it looks as if it slides up to the horn. Advice please. I am Q-Jet ignorant.

That's pretty much all you have to do.

      Thanks Joe,

But is that upper spring retainer self-positioning?

Paul, compress the spring and slide the top retainer over the the pump shaft, theres only one way for it to go.do you have air horn gasket? If the one on the carb isn't to old you maybe able to salvage.

Yes, I have a rebuild kit with gaskets. So it slides up?

Yes the spring will seat itself.

the spring retainer slips into the notch in the stem. the one you take out should show you how it should be. you have to remove the secondary rods and rod hanger before you remove the top. use a small amount of loc-tite when replacing the hanger screw. if the screw is tight to remove do not force it use some heat from a bernz torch but make sure the gas is all out of the carb.you will also have to remove the rod that activates the choke. you will need to drive the pivot pin out of the accerator pump arm with a pin punch.

That sounds terribly complicated. A torch on a carb? Sounds like a recipe for a fire.

Thanks, that is what I thought it would be. Clem's solution sounds scary.

the screw that holds the secondary rod hanger is very small in diameter a #3 size and i have had to remove a few after someone used too much muscle to remove it and broke it off the the metering rod holder. they are loc tited from the factory so they don't end up in the engine. the heat will loosen up the loc tite. if you find that the primary metering rod piston will not stay down in its bore you will need on of these item #85-150 on http://www.carburetion.com/quadrajet.asp. a lot of these older Q jets have the top of the metering rod bore chipped away making it hard to keep the piston in place till you get the top back on. i am passing this info along as someone who has worked on several hundred Q jets in my life time

Thanks Clem. I sense that I am going to get myself in trouble! I have a friend who knows Q-Jets and can probably help me with this.

if the primary metering rod piston does not stay in place you will bend the tips of the primary rods when you try and put the top back on. same with the secondary rods if you try and put the top back on with them installed in the top. take your time and don't force anything. and you will be OK

                          Clem,
I am not going to try it. I will live with a minor off-idle stumble rather than a non-functional vehicle due to my incompetence. The driving season here is short and I do not wish to disable the vehicle for a summer.

try opening the idle fuel/air bleed screws about a 1/2 turn each and see if the stumble goes away

...as long as it doesn't have the limiter caps still on the idle screws.
