    black paint

I'm getting ready to paint fender wells and engine compartment on a 58 vette.
can anyone tell me if there is a commonly used paint, flat or semi gloss, for this process.

This subject comes up from time to time and you can do a archive search for various answers ...... I like a gloss level about 40% and have used Low sheen Blitz Black by John Deere.

The original #1613 is still available. You will need to obtain it through a industrial jobber.Ed

I just purchased a case of 6 cans, Krylon 1613, from Fastenal. Their part number is 0682457. The price with shipping was $43.74.

The "real" (semi-flat) 1613 we're familiar with has been transferred to their Industrial product line, and has been re-numbered as "K01613"; here's another source:

The real 1613 has not been transfered, it never left. The part number was always K01613 and is the original formula. Read my article in the Corvette Restorer Volume 36, Number 2.

How many years did G.M. use this semi-flat black for black out? Tom

                    Tom -

For about 30 years ('53-'82); don't know about later years.

I called Krylon and they told me K01613 can only be purchased in my area through an industrial supplier like Grangers so I went to Grangers today and bought a case. The salesman told me it was listed as a hazardous material and could only be purchased by those with a business account (which I have). The labelling on the can says it's "Not for retail sale."

I sprayed the recommended Krylon primer tonight and even the primer is some tough stuff.

Just follow John link Hinckley's - I used to get a case of four cans several weeks a go without a hitch. As usual john's advice was right on target. I test sprayed it with an original 1613 and some other commomly used paints here and it was a dead on match in gloss for the old trusted 1613.
