Agree with John, after finding such a neat car and spending thousands to get it back on the road to enjoy driving it why would you want to worry about the tank? For the small investment of a new one you can take the car out and not have to worry about problems from an old tank. Been there done that, learned the hard way!

The radiator shop I worked for years ago, we use Trichlor (not sure on spelling), we would pour five gallons in the tank and let it sit over night. no rust no varnish.

Triclor is trichloroethane, a solvent used cleaning circuit boards and other solvent cleaning applications.
It is non-flamable which is good.

Trichloroethane will do nothing to/for rust, and attacks many plastics. Be very careful of the fumes of trichlor. They are toxic.

Terry's right. One might read the health warnings.
We all know that EPA warnings can be overboard, but usually...where's there's smoke, there's fire.....

1,1,2-Trichloroethane, or 1,1,2-TCA, is an organochloride solvent with the molecular formula C2H3Cl3. It is a colorless, sweet-smelling liquid that does not dissolve in water, but is soluble in most organic solvents.
It is used as a solvent and as an intermediate in the synthesis of 1,1-dichloroethane.
1,1,2-TCA is a central nervous systemdepressant and inhalation of vapors may cause dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath, unconsciousness, or cancer.
Good carburetion is fuelish hot air . . .

We used to use it in the electrical utility industry in copious amounts. NOT ANY MORE. And there is a very good reason why. The young guys in this industry will live a lot longer than the old farts like me because they were not exposed to this and a whole long list of other nasty things.
