    C2 Rear Camber bolt

    Gentlemen,

The rear camber bolt assembly has a hole approx 3/8" diameter in the cam portion of the bolt. What is the function of the hole in the center of the cam?

FYI the replacement MOOG camber bolt pieces do not have this hole.

I've often wondered about that, myself. In a Corvette application I can see no functional reason for the hole. However, there might have been a MANUFACTURING reason for the hole.

Thanks for asking that question !

If you have read many of my Posts you know I am no mechanic ! Not even close to one .So while it puzzled me as well , I wasn't going to ask it here , as I need , and will continue to need , lots more help on items way more important to me . I first assumed it was there to assist in turning it . Using some sort of 90 degree bent tool. ..... I soon realized that was foolish , and wondered more about it for days .

I must admit I had never considered Joe's idea. The only other thing I could think of was that it was used on other vechiles as well , where the hole was used to spot a mark , or series of them ,on the other side .

      How about that one Joe?

        Randy:

I think the hole is smaller than 3/8 inch....maybe 3/16 inch. At least it is on the two sets I have.

Also, I wondered about the purpose, but couldn't really find one. Some replacements have and some do not.

Does anyone know what the adjustment (hash) marks on the cam represent? Does each one equal a camber degree or 1/2 camber degree, etc?? Again, some replacements do not have these either.

Here is another idea. I use the holes to initialize the adjustment setting, set both holes at same angle - upon completion they usually end up at the same angle, only use visual tool (eye)
Now the original bolts do not have any lines - at least for 63/64

          Just another idea!

            Hello;
Always thought the hole marked the center of the adjustment travel against the background. Lines, where applied, are not always visible. The lines are there to give a reference point, before and after adjustment.
            Just my 2 cents.

I'd guess that hole was used to index the washers all the same way in the machine that pressed them onto the bolt.

The cam and bolt assembly had no other application than 63+ Corvette. However, the separate cam (used on the other end of the bolt) did have another application. That application was in the lower front suspension of 62-67 Chevy II. In fact, the cam was initially released for that application a year before it was used for Corvette.

My new guess is that you and John are correct, ie a manufacturing aid.

Is there a flat washer on the camber bolt in addition to the LW?

                    Thanks

Thanks Joe. I'll just use the LW.
