I've read just about all the posts on this subject and I think I understand pretty well how the vacuum system works but it's complicated to say the least. My problem is that the wiper door closes before the wipers are parked so it appears to me as though the safety valve is not working properly. Any thoughts on my assumption? I'm guessing that if I took the safety valve out so that the wiper arm did not depress the top of the valve, that when the wipers park, the door should stay open?

Re: wiper door safety switch
Jim how close to being in the park position are your wipers? That valve that your wipers park on is adjustable. The mounting holes are slotted so you can adjust it up or down. If your wipers are out of that range I would replace the valve. Hope this helps Reed- Top

Re: wiper door safety switch
Richard is on the money in my book! The safety valve is actuated by the RH arm pushing against it when the arm assumes its 'park' position. That triggers the wiper door vacuum to initiate the door closing proceedure.
So, play with the position of the valve on its slotted mounting holes to move the valve further down/away from the RH wiper arm to make the door close later...- Top

Re: wiper door safety switch
Jim, look closely at the safety switch, they will cause many problems if the button on the end breaks off, which is a common problem. what ever position it breaks the the internal piston can be stuck between two ports or between the vent port and vaccum supply port.( These are plastic valves as is the internal piston that moved when button is depressed)New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: wiper door safety switch
Hi Jim,
Beyond the help you've received may I suggest the Vacuum System Trouble Shooting Guide that Dr. Rebuild sells. If you haven't seen it I think you'll find it does a very good job of describing what each component does and how to test each component individually. I think it's well worth the few $ it costs.
The wiper door/wipers and headlights can be quite an adventure.
