70 L46 dip stick and tube

Did they seal up the dip stick tube with anything where it goes through the block? I see where Dr. Rebuild sells an o ring.

Did they have any type of seal where the dip stick seats against the dip stick tube?

    Thanks, Bill

Bill if I had the tube out I would put a dab of #2 permatex on it before I pressed it in. I have seen them leak especially big blocks without the permatex. Hope this helps Reed

No o-ring seal was used on small blocks for the tube. However, a seal was used on big blocks where the dipstick tube inserts into the pan. It's not exactly an o-ring, though. At least, it's not a circular cross section o-ring; it's a square cross section o-ring.

For the dipstick, itself, I believe there is a seal used which is under the "umbrella". However, I don't think it's replaceable; it's integral with the dipstick assembly.

By the way, although no o-ring was ORIGINALLY used on a small block dipstick tube, that does not mean that using one is not a good idea. By placing an o-ring under the collar of the tube and, then driving the tube down so that the collar fully compresses the o-ring, potential leaks might be eliminated. In any event, I can't see where it would do any harm and o-rings are pretty cheap.
