    C1 Pulley allignment problem

I was trying to correct a bubba fix, in my 1960 and now i have an aligment problem. I am trying to get to the bottom of my pulley alignment problem, but not sure where to start.

The generator pulley is forward of the water pump pulley which is far forward of the crankshaft pulley.

Looking for some advice and confirmation if I have mixed parts..

    Appreciate any help.

I beleive I have the wrong pulley on the harmonic balancer.. but not sure the harmonic balancer is correct for the CS Solid Lifter block..

Is more than 1/4" offset between the generator pully and the water pump pulley acceptable?

    Appreciate any help.

    Thanks,,
    Joe

What are the numbers on your pulleys? Have you checked them for correctness? I would start there. The pulleys have to be lined up or you will throw belts. Generator is easiest to line up as per the mentioned slots in the brackets. Do you have the correct brackets as per the assembly manual.

        Here's what I see:

You have the correct generator pulley.

You have a deep-cone, shallow groove passenger car water pump pulley.

You also have a shallow-groove passenger car crank pulley.

There is nothing wrong with the balancer.

You are missing the spacer that pushes the balancer forward by the thickness of the motor mount.

        To correct:

Buy the correct water pump pulley (a shallow cone, deep groove piece), the correct crank pulley ( a deep groove piece with the sheave offset forward about 3/4"), buy and install the spacer ring for the harmonic balancer (balancer must be removed and reinstalled).

This will get your belts in alignment.

Thanks for the tips.. guess its time to source some parts... any suggestions on where to buy?

I dont have any slots in the generator bracket. It was purchased from Paragon and looks correct according to Noland's book..

The part number on the balancer pulley is 3755820BC..

I cant find a part number on the waterpump pulley, but measured the height to be approximately 2 1/2" to the center of the v pulley.

I have had to move the hub on the water-pump to correct the alignment when nothing else worked. Their are several specifications for this distance. It can be pulled off the shaft it it is on too far. If it it needs to go in the only method I would use it to pull the water pump from the motor then the back steel cover from the pump. Use a very short and small diameter plug to support the pump shaft from the impeller side, then using a press push the hub on the required amount. Only do this after confirming the lower spacer is indeed installed behind the harmonic balancer.
            Best of luck

I just completed this same work. I sourced the parts from Corvette Central. I purchased the spacer for the crank between the Harmonic Balancer, the Balancer Pulley, the water pump pulley (and reinforcement plate that goes behind it), and also had to change out the pulley on my passenger car generator. Pretty easy job as long as you use the right tools to remove then reinstall the Harmonic Balancer. I already had the right brackets for the generator. Rick

                How much was the spacer?

Paragon (#797) has it and Corvette Central (#301020) also has it for $7

                    Thanks for the advice..

                    Just a quick update:

I found a balancer pulley and bought the water pump pulley and balancer spacer from Paragon.

I am about to pull the balancer to install the spacer and everything looks like it will line up properly... FINALLY!!

I took the downtime to restore the heater assembly.

I also took the opportunity to replace the dash insulation..

I am looking forward to putting it all together this week and go for a nice drive next weekend.. with the new Aluminum Dewitt Radiatior and a new heater core.. SWEET!!

Thanks again for all the help.. Much appreciated!!

                    Joe
