I am researching a car for an NCRS member with a 62 Corvette who has a 3782870 block with a casting date of C18. Since I thought that the 870 was used in Chevy passenger cars and Corvettes from 62-65 I am not sure what this date means. I read it as being March 1 1968. Could that block have been produced by GM for a few years after 65? Any thoughts on what the date code means? This engine has been in the car for many years and the engine assembly date is F0302RE which is OK for the car. I suspect this engine has been restamped but would like to know what gives with the casting date. Did someone restamp an incorrect block? Thanks for any help. Bill Gould

Just a wild guess, but the C_1_8 might be really C_1_3 (March 1st) and assembled the next day. The casting of such small numbers was pretty rough.- Top

Re: 870 block casting date help please
Kevin, I have the original block in my early June 66 Corvette and the block reads E266 for May 26 1966 (My birthday coincidentally) . It may be that the 870 block has a cast date without the last digit representing the year but I have not seen one like that. The car with the 870 block is a June 62 car.
Wayne, C13 would also not make sense because a March 1 1963 block would be a year after the build date of the car. Either way it appears that this block does not fit the car. I would feel better if I knew if the 870 block was made after 65. If it was not then might it be that the cast date was incorrectly applied? Thanks for your comments.- Top

Re: 870 block casting date help please
The 3782870 block was only used from 62 - 65. It would seem the engine is not original to the car.
The block has the date cast into the rear passenger side and has the assembly date stamped into the front passenger side.- Top

Re: 870 block casting date help please
Gonna show my ignorance, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I seem to remember there were some blocks (not sure of the casting #) that were cast with only the month and day, no year. I do not have my judging manuals close to me so that I can confirm what this feeble brain is trying to extract from memoryDick Whittington- Top
