Wayne, sometimes the pinch bolt has clasped the rag joint and may just need something to wedge it open a little, like a thick screw driver blade.

Thanks Edward. It worked shaft went in half way. Bolt was quite tight to install.

I find that I have to remove the bolt completely to allow the installation of the steering column.

Bob that is what I ended up doing. Did you find the bolt takes a fair bit of
          torque to get tight.

No I nerver had difficulty snugging up the bolt. The steering post that goes into the rag joint has a flat spot on it. I think that flat spot must be where the bolt is located. Even if the bolt is loose it blocks the post from slidding in. Once the post is in place the bolt should thread in easily. There is some adjustment in the 63 steering column. I think the flat part of the post is where this adjustment originates from. There is a bout 2" of in out play. I set my steering wheel as far in as it would go as I'm tall and need the room in the car. Someone short could pull the wheel closer. All that adjustment is in the rag joint bolt.
