    C1 battery tray location

I'm replacing the battery tray on my '57, long gone. I can get close but would appreciate some accurate locating dimensions if someone can provide. There is an elongated hole in the frame rail about 3" forward of the front edge of the tray, can someone give me a more precise measurement please, and maybe from the frame rail to the outer edge of the tray at the front or rear?

Would I be correct in assuming the tray is square with the axis of the frame, not with the frame rail in that area?

    Thanks for any help.

    Rod,

Rats!!! I just left the shop and it rained like crazy here a while ago so I can't help right now but will get you the measurements in the morning.

For now......... if you have the AIM doesn't it have measurements? Here are some photos of the 59 I'm doing which may help the axis question.

Rod, I just measured for you.

From the front of the curve of the oval hole in the forward part of the rail(i.e. the oval hole "ahead of" the tray), to the outside forward corner of the tray, I get 11 1/4".

From the front of the curve of the oval hole in the rearward part of the rail(i.e. the oval hole "behind" the tray), to the outside rearward corner of the tray, I also get 11 1/4".

kinda odd they're both the same. maybe a "design" feature.

        Rich,

Thanks, that should help. And no, no measurements in the AIM.

I'm replacing my battery tray and the pics are very good. Should the tray be level when it is mounted? Do you have any measurements? When I set the tray in place it is not level, should it be level?

I replaced the one in my 1960. I got mine from Paragon and as I recall they included a sheet with some measurements. I cut the old tray out and ground down the welds then put the new tray in the same weld spots. It measured pretty close to the dimension that Paragon included as I recall. It looks like it fits good to me, but this was my first. Here's a couple of pictures, one with my new real tar-top battery I just got. Now if I only had an engine in it to start

I tack welded the try to the frame but when I place a level on the tray it is not level. This is with the level placed parallel with the frame. Should the tray be level or not?

                  Brandon,

I have the car mostly assembled(from the above pics I posted long ago after welding the new tray in)....I just measured and I get about 1/4"+ down tilt forward and about 1/4"+ down tilt outward as the car sits on the flat ground.

I placed the level on the frame and the tray appears to be nearly level to the frame, maybe off 1/8" or so. I placed the level on the frame parallel to the wide part of the tray. But note it's outward about 1/4" with respect to the ground as explained above.

If you have it tack welded to the original locations(that's what I did), I'd say as long as it's fairly straight you should be fine.
