Finish steering arm to knuckel nut

We've had a a recent thread on this. The bolt is black oxide or phosphate as per previous discusion. But the nut looks like it shows reminants of zinc plate, is this correct. I have trouble distinguishing between shinny steel and zinc plate on small surfaces.

There is no lock washer - is this correct?

There is no details in the AIM since this was pre-assembled before arriving at the factory. Is the bolt head on the knuckle steering side or the arm side? This might be obvious once I assemble, but I thought I'd ask first. I disassembled it but my memory is short.

The nut is Stover style self-locking. It has a zinc finish. No lockwasher is used as these are never used with a self-locking nut.

The nut was originally of GM #9422302. However, it was discontinued some time ago and replaced by GM #9442940. I don't know if the latter is configured just like the 9422302, though.

Oh, Oh,, I ran a tap through it last night. As I was doing it, I noticed that there wasn't a lock washer. But the nut ran freely on the bolt before I ran a tap through it. So I didn't think it was self-locking.

As I was running the tap, I noticed that there was a small amount of "pulsation" as the tap spun. I should have clued in.

I guess I'll be using loctite. or getting the new GM nut.

        Joe,
Here is the new steering arm nuts. Not very close to the original.

Looks like the 3 tooling pinch points could be ground off and then the nut could be replated.

Personally, if I were using these new nuts, I would not attempt to modify them in any way. These are very important, safety related pieces and I wouldn't even want the slight possibility of compromising that for the sake of a nuance of originality.
