    1967 inside rear view mirror

    Gents,

I am helping a friend who recently purchased a '67 L-71 convertible replace some incorrect parts. The car currently has a '72 style & up inside rear view mirror. VIN # 8947, should this have the same style mirror as '68 thru '71? Thanks for your assistance.

    Warren -

Yes, it should - bright housing, gray plastic surround and day/night lever.

Re: 1967 inside rear view mirror

I think there were 2 types of day/night levers for 1967 and the early ones used the knob style and later used the lever. Your car is earlier, so I'm not sure that it should use the lever. Maybe a someone with a judging manual handy will check in and give their opinion. I know you're a judge John.

The knob is used up to vin#2500. The lever is used after Vin#2500.

Re: 1967 inside rear view mirror

I just got gigged in Gettysburg for grey mirror. My car is a 33,000 mile 67 Red Roadster Bowtie Cantidate that I have had since 1978 and not changed the mirror.
I was told that it was to be all chrome.
          Can someone help?
          Thanks in advance.

Ken, the mirror should be like John described.

That's really surprising. Isn't the grey mirror called out specifically in the judging guide?

My early 67 also has a grey mirror. The all chrome ones were in 66 and earlier.

The '67 day/night mirror has a gray rubber surround. Per the TIM&JG, "its components include a mounting shaft, a polished stainless steel body, gray rubber surround, mirror glass, and a knob or lever." Pete

Re: 1967 inside rear view mirror

A detail that's omitted from the text is the color (colour for our 'proper' English speaking NCRS Members) of the early '67 mirror's actuating knob.

The knob material used '64-66 was grey plastic. But, having disassembled quite a few of these, I've found the plastic was shot with black paint that tends to wear away on the exposed lower portion of the knob which is subject to human touch.

The rubber safety surround for the mirror glass of the '67 and later D/N mirrors was grey in color and the L-shaped actuating levers on these mirrors were natural grey plastic. That coordinated nicely with the rubber surround.

The trivia detail I KNOW I don't know is whether or not these short-run, early, versions of the '67 D/N mirror had their trapezoidal shaped actuating knobs painted black like the earlier '64-66 units or if they were left unpainted, natural grey plastic color, to coordinate with the rubber surround...

Thanks for the help guys. I guess that even the best can miss one once in a while. My Judging experience at Gettysburg was excellent. The show was fantastic and the countryside was undiscribably beautiful. It was only topped by the feeling of pride in the history of our country and the bravery of our soldiers then and now.

                      CORRECTION!!!

I previously stated, in error that I got hit in Gettysburg for a mirror with grey surround. I WAS WRONG! I just received the sheets and I was hit
for the mirror being BLACK on the surround. I am still surprised that this mirror was changes, as this is a 1967 30,000 Mile Survivor that I have had
                      many many years.
The Judges were correct on this one and followed the manual.
Has anyone heard of a black surround mirror?
                      Please advise.
                      Thanks.

Ken - The later GM replacement mirror for 67 Corvettes and other GM vehicles that used the 8" day/night mirror had the black rubber surround. Pete
