    Reusing tower clamps

The repop tower clamps available today seem to be made of a thinner gage metal than the originals. That's probably why they don't work very well.

I'd like to re-use the originals I have, but I've never had much success removing tower clamps without damaging them beyond repair. Is there a way of get them off without damage?

    Thanks

Using a nut driver, loosen the bolt slightly and push bolt straight into clamp. Repeat as needed.

      Mike,
No matter if you use an original or replacement, you need to oil coat the slding surfaces to prevent bending the clamp.

I use wd40 or motor oil does not seem to matter, just so they are not dry.

Also wd40 soak clamp prior to removal as Sal was saying.

        Mike -

My '69 Z/28 still has its original Wittek tower clamps, and I removed and re-used them nine years ago when I replaced the heater hoses. Put a little oil on them, loosened with a nut driver, tapped on the end with a small hammer, and they loosened up nicely. Re-oiled when I re-installed them so the strap moved easily through the yoke when tightening.

The repro dated tower clamps are indeed junk; 3 out of 4 failed after installation on my '67, and I replaced them with original Witteks with 70's dates. Freedom from leaks/failure is more important to me than dates.

I took some off my 65 no problem. I sprayed them with W-D the night before and took them right off with a nut driver. Then I soaked them for a few days in a mixture I make up with about half and half motor oil and diesel fuel. Take em out wipe the excess off and good to go. Tom

The metal looks a bit more substantial on the old clamp....
