Motor Oil Temperature

Who can elaborate on the pros and cons of each:

1. Mineral based motor oil running at 180 - 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Full synthetic motor oil running at 260 - 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Those are exactly the temps I use for cooking french fries. Final step is two minutes at 375.

Might want to try veggie or peanut oil though.

Michael, few people take the time to properly cook french fries. You have it right...fry twice, 300-325F then 375F.

The synthetic has trans fats which are known to cause over 500,000 heart attacks per year in the USA alone, use the crude natural stuff, not only is it better for the body, you can use the old stuff from the oil changes and get your minerals at the same time.

Somehow Joe, I don't think they are taking you seriously. Guess they like to pull your chain and you walked right into it.

It is an interesting subject. I used to always have an oil temp gauge on my cars back in the day, and I'd like to have one in my Vette, but I don't like to be scared to death. That is one gauge that likes to go up near as fast as your tach! I wasn't aware that synthetic oils would run hotter. I use them in my family driver all the time - interesting.

Just as a side line to the gauge business, I also used to use a transmission temp gauge on my old Chevy wagons. I lost two 200 model tranny's back in my 1980 wagon before I changed it to a 350 model w/o a lockup. That was interesting to watch as well, specially when carrying a heavy load and/or climbing out of the Mississippi river valley.

The C6 Corvettes (might be C5, also) come with an oil temperature read out as part of the DIC (Diagnostic Information Center, for those of you with a dirty mind). Neat stuff to play with to be sure the engine oil temperature is up before one makes those 7000 rpm shifts. Gets me all warm and moist thinking about it.

I have good reason to ask the question, though, because of a modification that I have done to my engine. Exxon-Mobil Oil Co. petroleum engineers have told me that synthetic oils will NOT oxidize at temps NORTH of 400 degrees, Fahrenheit. The question is: "if that is true, then is there any advantage to running such elevated oil temperatures"?

You will see elevated oil temps in race cars due to blocking the air flow to the coolers, in an attempt to get more downforce on the front. I see no advantage in normal useage .

On another note, I know for a fact that Clevite 77 bearings are not a long life commodity at oil temps of 280

I can confirm that statement- this is one of the few properties of synthetics that justify their use in gas turbines. Soak back temperature of bearing cavities can easily reach 400F levels after shutdown and synthetics are required to avoid the accumulation of carbon depositis (coking).

Is there an advantage to deliberately running the oil at that temp? Can't think of one other than properly browning the fries.

The pile of "discharge" is financing anti gun agendas. I am sure, if the Supreme Court rules in favor of gun owners on the case they just heard, he will spend a tremendous amount of his and taxpayers money to fight the ruling.
