    66 Power brake question

Was the booster nut plate (under the wiper grill) and accompanying flat rivets (firewall side) installed prior to black out?
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Pete -

Yes. The nut plate was installed in the off-line cowl & dash subassembly operation in the Body Shop.

        Pete,

they are not flat rivets but "universial" with a slightly domed head. Sometimes they will look flat after peened over. Paragon and LICS has the right rivets.

          Rich,
That is a PITA since, I bought the mounting kit from one of the two companies you listed and just set the rivets last night that were in the kit.
I knew that went too easy - drilling the four holes, setting the two "FLAT" rivets and black out painting.

            Pete,

here are 2 pictures of different rivets. I have restored no less than 15 midyeats with power brakes and every one had the universial head.
Also I dont know how you set the rivets but this is how I do it. First off the rivet goes from the engine compartment into the wiper well. there is no way to squarely put the riet setting tool in the wiper well so I put the setting tool on the head of the rivet on the firewall side. Then I put the backing tool in the wiper well. Doing it this way will give you the right "squish" on both sides.
The drawing is a flat head rivet and the picture is a universial head rivet.

              Rich,
That is just how I did it, I have a very small angle headed bucking bar that fit pretty good. The only thing I did wrong was use the wrong rivet. I will drill them out and start over.
I found a supplier that has "universal" rivets that look like your picture and the rivets that attach the hood catch to the firewall.
I looked in the catalogs of both the aforementioned companies and both have pictures of rounded head rivets in their kits now. I did a search on Paragon's site for the GM part number 455642 and that rivet is sold as part of a bracket kit. I'll give them a call Monday and see what they have or I will order from the rivet supplier.
              Thanks for the help,
              Pete

Rich & John, Thanks for the info. I got the correct rivets and got them installed and am back to painting and just wanted to check one more point before mounting the booster assembly. I understand from John's info the plate and rivets were painted during blackout but I just wanted to be clear about the two mounting bolts - My guess is they were mounted later when the booster was mounted and should have no black paint on them.
                Thanks again guys,
                Pete

                  Pete,

Thats correct bolts were installed later and are zinc/cad. 3/8-16 x 1" recessed hex head and a captured split ring lock washer most common headmarking Anchor, but many others were used.
