Re: NOS 1966 231 ignition coil

Since I originally posted this over two years ago I have acquired two more 231 coils. One I feel very good that it is an original production part. The other seems pretty good, but it has been "reconditioned", so the finish is different. The other difference is the stamping. All I have ever heard is that this was an assembly line only part so I am wondering if the "231 12v" stampings would have differed like this. Also, both have posts that attract a magnet very strongly. If you have any opinions after looking at the pics I would like to hear them. Thanks.

      Larry,

A vehicle assembly plant - Assembly line has nothing to do with a Delco Remy component part production line.

Having said that - no, the two could not have been made at the same time unless there was more than one die and that is unlikely for the low volume.

The other thing that is obvious is the copycat parts failed to get the Delco Remy logo correct, the Y is the obvious part but other letters aren't so hot either.

Tell me more about the reconditioning process and who did it? Is it a repaint and label or do they take the coil apart and put new stuff in it?

If a rebuild is the case, then it is highly probable that is where the metal can variation from the known original comes from.

Re: NOS 1966 231 ignition coil

I am not thinking that they made the coil where they assembled the vehicle, I am wondering however if they did in fact use more than one die to produce this part through its limited run. Maybe producing in two different places? Presumably these were not only used in Corvettes, but any other chevy big block applications with TI? As for the reconditioning process, I do not know. The best I can do is say it was probably done in the 90''s and the can is the same diameter (checked with a mic) as the known original. The reproduction one I have is larger in diameter. If anyone has a known original that appears as the one on the right that would be nice to know.
