    Under body brackets

Wondering if anyone could tell me the correct finishes on the brackets on the underside of a 66. The seat brackets appeared to be semi-gloss black. The others were rusty so couldn't tell. I ended up cleaning them the best I could and then sand blasting the brackets to get them clean. Going for the top flight award.
    Thank you Roy

Roy semi-gloss black is the color you want to use. I would use a good etching primer under the semi-gloss black.

      Under body brackets

      Roy,

Unless the underbody reinforcement plates are going to be hit with blackout, e.g. the upper body mount in the rear wheel wells, I think the rivets holding the plates on should not have any evidence of the semi-gloss paint. Do you agree?

One of the old timers on here suggested you put a dab of axle grease on the rivets, paint, then just wipe off. I did, works great!

You almost certainly have a St.Louis built body. Correct?

St Louis bodies had almost all steel reinforcements painted semi gloss black before they were riveted to the body. This includes the front header reinforcement, the radiator support, the sheet metal rearward seat mount brackets, and the rear bulkhead upright support. This may hold true for the seat belt anchors as well, although they may have been unpainted. Two of the four forward 1/4" steel seat nut plates were (I believe) unpainted steel. It is either the inboard or the outboard and I'm not sure which. Someone may chime in on this.

            1/4" seat nut plates

            Joe,

If you mean the 4 nut plates for the rear underbody attachment of the seats, all 4 on my St. Louis car I'm fairly certain were unpainted. At least they all look identical in terms of a rusty patina.

I will prime with DP90LF then spray a coat of 1623 krylon to achieve a semi-gloss shine. I will try the grease trick I think. It is a St.Louis car. The two inboard nut plates are riveted on and the two outboard are held in by the bolts. That could explain why the outboard plates might not have been painted ???
              Thanks Roy

                Re: Under body brackets

I thought that the two long channel brackets that hold the front of the seats are supposed to be black phosphate( for a 73 anyway).

This was what I got from Caledonia as replacements since mine was total rusted. I have the identical set-up for my 73.

I know this isn't the same years, but you may want to check closer on this.

In any case, I painted my replacement as you are with dpl90 followed by the semi flat since I don't like the corrosion protection of the black phosphate. I'll take the point hit.

                  Re: Under body brackets

On my 64, all the brackets except the 1/4" seat plates were semi gloss black. Seat plates were raw metal with the two inboard ones riveted in place, would be a difficult reach for installer to hold it while starting the seat track bolts etc.
