I need to replace my spare tire carrier on my '67 coupe (broken glass around edge of tray and can't put my red lines in inflated since it is a white wall size so need longer front bolts and locking bolt) and am wondering about how it goes together. The two front bolts seem to have a welded nut in the frame bar it goes into, is that correct? Also, the tray cover has rivets to attach the V brace, how do you secure the rivets, is there a special tool, etc. The tub looks OK, so I will leave it. Thanks for any advice.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier issues
They were a bear to get out of my 65. I had three bolts that were a problem and the two tire carrier bolts were tough. I soaked them for several days and could not get them. I had my son come over the thrid day and he was able to get them. I am wondering if it is the coating on them that was the problem?Good luck! Tom- Top

Re: Spare Tire Carrier issues
Tom - I don't think it's the "coating" that's a problem as much as the location. They came out with no problem on my Texas car; but my "rescue" car from Cheesehead Land that was rode hard and put away wet, took 3 men and a boy to get them out. I hope you thanked your son.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier issues
I not only thanked him but also fed him. I would have been better off hiring about 10 illegals. It would have been cheaper. Mine still have the metalic finish on the threads. Thats why I thought maybe that was it. Tom- Top

Re: Spare Tire Carrier issues
Mine turned easy and came right out, with the welded nuts staying on the frame cross member. The rear locking bolt was another matter. It was missing the barrel nut and pin, just had an old, rusted nut. Soaking and some elbow grease needed to be that bolt out. I am now replacing the tray, front bolts (proper redline length), rear locking bolt (proper redline length) and barrel nut with locking pin. The brace with the new rivets to attach the tray was a bear, the rivet tool I had was hardly able to set them. Glad you got yours done. Cheers. They were a bear to get out of my 65.
