1959/Roman Red

I have recently been trying to achieve the correct shade of Roman Red.I have tried Dupont and PPG mixing info which by the way have different amounts of Red ,White,and orange,and do not match each other or the original.I prefer an enamal paint product.This paint will be used on interior trim. Does anyone have a code or a suggestion that has passed judging ?No spray can products please.

the name of roman red changed to riverside red in the 60s

the riverside red formula is still available at PPG

Haven't tryed replacing Roman Red with Riverside red, but I have had Roman red mixed using PPG formula and it was still too orange.The closest I 've come so far was using a Dupont 1985 Chrysler red. That was after scanning the door jam of an old door.The sample panel was rubbed out and waxed to get bet possible example. The Chrysler red seemed to have very little orange and was identical to the door jam to eye.

As far as I know there are no off set formula's that are 100%. You or your painter will have to do the final tinting to make the paint match.

I thought Roman Red and Riverside Red were two different colors, but most of the paint codes are the same, so I gues not.

Steve, it's not surprising that everybody's different. Looks like you might have to do some custom mixing to get to the original color.

Thanks guys for input. You just reinforced what I suspected, red may not have been my best choice for an interior color.One added note ,no matter how many sample cans of paint I have mixed none match the soft trim by Al whats his name down in Texas.Next time I'm going black,if you know what I mean.

Stephen, I think that you will find that the painted trim and the upholstery did not match when new.

Its very interesting that someone does not have some paint formulas for Roman Red. Steve, maybe someone will still find this and provide you an answer. Your tip - black is black works, you just have to reorder your '59 in black.

They do have codes for Roman red. The problem is they all come out producing different shades of red depending on brand and none match the original.

I assume the closest you will come is to have your paint supplier match a sample of your original Roman Red, provided you have an original sample.

Steve, as I posted before, that is the ONLY way you will get a match, and then quite often it will have to be tinted slightly. We have had to do this for over 20 years, unless early on we found some factory packs, and even then some of those had to be tinted.

Dick, right on about the tinting. Back in '65 when my '57 was repainted Polo White the left over same batch paint was poured from a quart can into a smaller can. It was the same paint as newly sprayed on the car. I checked the small can a few years ago and put a sample of it next to the car and it did not perfectly match. Over time the '65 paint job aged and changed tint (along with oils coming to the surface and eyes and memory deteriorating) and I assume the can did also. Too bad original paint isn't as it looked on the cars when new. That is one reason same year solid colors on two cars often look different at judging. Metallic is multiplied by the flake differences.

Steve, according to a DuPont Classic Corvette paint chart from 2006 - Roman Red paint code is 2931 for both 1959 & 1960. Gary....

My 62 is Roman Red lacquer (28 years old). I have had the hardtop, wheels and trunk lid repainted in BC/CC. My body shop matched it pretty good. Not sure what type of paint. I can ask. What info do you need?
