    Steering box shim kit

Is there a source for the 605142 shim kit for lash adjuster screw for GM steering boxes. Mine measures .006 so the screw is wore some and needs to be tightened.

What have others done because this kit is not available.

    Tim,
Check with member Gary Ramadei. Gary rebuilds steering boxes and knows everything there is to know about them.

Are you saying the measured clearance is .006"? IIRC it should be no more than 002", so if you measure the current shim, you can compute what shim is necessary, and I'm sure someone will have one laying around.

The part is not worn, just typical of a stock box. You want it between 001-002". I have shim kits in my master kits, if you can find/make them I can break down a kit and sell a set of shims.

There is very little wear in the adjusting bolt. With the feeler guages, .006 goes easily but .008 will not go, I don't have .007 to check but book says no more than .002 clearance. The shim that's in there has a 3 on the top so maybe .063 I will check. I could use another .004-.005 and that's alot of play..

The worm feels good but my inlb. torque wrench is 0-150 and I am having a difficult time setting preload because it's not accurate for 3-5 inlbs. I think I need to find a 0-30 torque wrench for this adjustment.

I realize this is an old thread but to hopefully close the loop, the appropriate shims in .003. 005 and .007 inches thick were included in my steering box rebuild kit from Corvette Central.
