    hardtop stand

Can anyone give me info on who makes a hardtop stand that allows the top to rest on the front header bar rather than the back window? It seems that having the top rest on its back window and lower rubber molding would cause it to deform over time.

Thanks for any info or help.

I agree with Roy. I know many people do rest it on the glass, but it just gives me the chills to see it. Mine rests on the header from early May until Oct. then it rests on the car.

I bought the standard hard top stand for my 1960 from CC and make sure the weight is on the front bow, not the window.

            Re: hardtop stand

Thanks for the info Mark. I spent big bucks restoring my hardtop for my Inca Silver 57. I will be using the convertible top most of the summer and I want to have a stand for the hardtop that I can easily move around in my garage. I have looked at the stand in the CC catalog and others ,but they all show the hardtops resting on the back window which I would never want to do for obvious reasons. I wasn't sure if dimensionally it would work and be balanced properly with the header bar down but it sounds like you were able to do it. Did you have to alter the stand in any way for balance or center of gravity? It it worked for you I may just go ahead and order one and do the same.
Thanks again for your quick response and good info.

            Bob

Remember, it's a heck of a lot easier replacing the header w/s than the rear w/s. A lot cheaper too.

The top sits very well in the stand resting on the bow. It is very stable and well padded. I position my top so no weatherstrip is in contact with the stand. The aluminum bow makes the contact along with the painted surface of the top. My laquer paint is 20 years old so I have no issues with the foam imprinting into the paint. I would ask your painter if he would be concerned with that.

                  Re: hardtop stand

                  Hello,

After buying my convertible with the optional hardtop I was concerned about
how to store it when not in use. I searched all the different suppliers and all
I could find was either a pulley system to hang it overhead or this tubular
                  upright stand for $200.00.

I'm sure they are safe and somewhat sturdy. However, I didn't like the
notion of having all of that weight on the pointed edges of the top.
Now, if your storage space is limited, then this idea won't work for you.

I do have the space available, so it made it a "No brainer" for me.

I measured the top fore/aft and cross-car, bought a box of zinc coated wood
screws for pressure treated lumber along with 4" and 6" wide womanized
lumber in the lengths needed, designed and constructed a "Nest" to
support my top in "Vehicle position".

All of the weight is evenly distributed and I no longer have the fear of undue
weight and pressure on the top. I draped the wood structure with foam to
cushion and protect the top. Total cost: $56.00. I now have piece of mind.

I hope this helps. If you would like photos of it, the next time I'm at the
barn, I can take pictures of it.

                  Joe

I have about $30 worth of material in this. There was a post with dimensions.

                      John,
Be very careful with your hardtop stand.
If there is any pressure on the bottom frame or on the glass it could deform the glass.
I have attached 2 pictures of a hardtop that was storred with the glass down. It has caused the rear glass (Plexiglass) to deform and pop out of the gasket. The only way to fix it is to replace the glass.
I put a putty knife between the glass and the gasket to show what happened.

John is correct ! never never use the back window on any year hard top. As you see I even rest my original bubble top on the front .
